Happy Earth Day! We are always so proud of the students who enter their thoughtful projects in the Shane McConkey EcoChallenge. This year, we were especially stoked to see how these kids faced the unique challenges of school closures, remote learning and social distancing and still managed turned in some really amazing projects!... Congratulations to our first place winners, Team Don’t Drop the Top from Donner Trails Elementary in Truckee, CA! These kids collected over 400lbs of plastic bottle lids that aren’t recyclable in their area. These tops will be melted down and recycled into benches to be placed in their community! Second place goes to SWEP Sustainability Club which encompassed Elementary and Middle School kids from all the Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District. These kids raised awareness about micro-plastics in the Tahoe-Truckee Watershed. Students created 45 art pieces representing local wildlife sculpted from trash collected from the bottom of Lake Tahoe. These art pieces were installed in schools around the district to raise awareness. Team Peace by Piece is our third place winner from Creekside Charter School in Squaw Valley. These kids took on the environmental challenge of junk mail. By educating their community about the easy opt-out measures, the kids were able to save two full trees from the paper mill. Fourth place was awarded to Team 28 from C.K. Burns School in Saco, Maine. And honorable mention went to Okemo Mountain School and Enumclaw Middle School. We are excited to announce the introduction of the new #StayAtHome edition of the Shane McConkey EcoChallenge! Kids are busy with remote schooling, virtual classes and Zoom meetings with friends BUT if they need a creative break, we are offering some fun prizes for submissions of eco-minded projects. Let their imaginations run wild: maybe they want to submit photo of an art project made from recycled materials or a graph reflecting the environmental changes our world is seein...g since this global slow down, or maybe even a song or dance about the environment.
