At the end of Sukkot we welcome Simchat Torah a celebration of the Torah in which we mark the conclusion of the annual Torah readings, and begin a new reading cycle. . Shalom Institute is honored and privileged to be the home of two special Torahs. We are guardians of a 200-year-old Torah from Czechoslovakia which was rescued from the Holocaust (seen in the blue sash). Our Torah Scroll is one of 1,564 Czech Torahs found after WWII and is on loan to use from Museum Scrolls T...rust. Our Scroll dates back to the early 1800s and is one of eighteen scrolls from the Jewish community in Sedlany, Czechoslovakia, (located 60km south of Prague). In 2015, many of you were involved in the restoration of this Torah (pictured below) and it remains undeniably beautiful. Click here to read more: https://shalominstitute.com/our-holocaust-torah/ . Our 2nd Torah's history is unknown until the early-20th century when it was one of two Torahs at the Seminole Hebrew Center in Seminole, Oklahoma. Due to a decline in the Jewish population in the small towns of southern Oklahoma and an aging membership, SHC leadership gifted one of the Torahs to Shalom Institute when it closed in 2016. Marsha Katz Rothpan is from Ada, Oklahoma and SHC was her home synagogue. She is pictured below with the Torah, which is the same one she read from as a teenager. . How fitting that Shalom Institute, a place that is about strengthening Jewish identity and community, is now home to Torahs that lost their home breathing new life, continuing to connect our Jewish people, symbolizing a continuous chain through the lineage of our history. .
