To understand why it’s so much harder to mathematically describe rotations of objects in 3-D than in 2-D, imagine turning a steering wheel versus spinning a glo...be. On the steering wheel, all points turn at the same speed, whereas on a globe, points on the equator move faster on the equator, and the poles don’t move at all. Famed mathematician William Hamilton puzzled over how to describe 3-D rotations for over a decade. His solution 4-D numbers he dubbed quaternions would spur the rise of modern algebra and make deep connections to matter particles like electrons. See more
