We ran across these pictures recently and had to share them. Prof. Julie Paulson, Department Chair Gitanjali Shahani, and some of our literature students had the opportunity to study Shakespeare’s First Folio @sutrolibrary a few years ago. The First Folio was printed in 1623 and contains 36 of Shakespeare’s plays. It’s amazing that SFSU’s Sutro Library holds one of only 235 copies of this invaluable treasure! . #shakespeare #firstfolio #literature #sfsu #sfsuenglish #sfstate #sfstateenglish #book #reading #author #booknerd

Vera Claire (pictured with husband Sam), a 2018 graduate of our MA TESOL Program, was featured in a May 8, 2020 article in Architectural Digest, A Mexican Artisan Collective Fights COVID-19 With a Simple Handwashing Station. Vera was already working in Oaxaca running her non-profit organization Cosa Buena and teaching English in the local neighborhood when Covid-19 struck. Vera recounts, Traditional markets are a way of life here in Oaxaca, and many people live day by ...day and have to visit them frequently. I felt this was somewhere I could be of service to our community. I began thinking about hand washing stations. I started researching and received a lot of helpful information from the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) website. My husband and I built a prototype station and worked with our local market's administrator to get it set up at the entrance. The community responded wonderfully and we were asked to start building them for all the markets in Oaxaca and the villages where I work with our traditional artisans. Our alums are amazing! Keep changing the world Vera! Sorry to brag but we had to share a few kind words about our MA Literature Program from alum Dena Rod. . "I feel indebted to SFSU's MA Literature program because it laid the bedrock for my worldview and political framework today. The legacy of social justice inherent in SFSU taught me to never be afraid of questioning the canonical texts and seeking those whose writing is typically pushed to the fringes. I was encouraged on this path by my graduate advisors and thesis commi...ttee, which led to me writing my MA thesis on Audre Lorde's poetry at a time when most were not as familiar with her work as they are today. Studying Lorde's work in such depth cemented the importance of not remaining silent in the face of the systems that would rather keep us silent. Today, I'm a poet, writer, and editor who works to illuminate my experiences as a queer Iranian American in the diaspora, following in Audre Lorde's legacy of defining herself before others dare to. I have SFSU's MA Literature program to thank! . Thank you for the kind words Dena and for being a part of our Lit family! We’re in awe of Dena’s work since graduating! Make sure to check out it out here: https://www.denarod.com/ . #SFSU #SFSUEnglish #poet #poetry #writer #writing #editor #socialjustice #gradstudent #highereducation #literature #audrelorde #book #essays See more
