Facebook keeps offering to set up a fundraising campaign for my birthday. While it's suggested a lot of good causes, I really want to support my students, who a...re working so hard to get a college education in a crazy expensive city. If you're a student newspaper adviser or a SFSU journalism alum, if you care about journalism education and freedom of speech, if you want to support low-income students and students of color, consider making a gift to the San Francisco State Journalism Department. Find out more here: https://journalism.sfsu.edu/make-gift Thanks so much for supporting aspiring journalists. We need them now more than ever!

Sign up. Get published. Win awards! Jour 575 (Community Media) will be offered in Spring 2020. The class taught by Prof. Jon Funabiki is a collaboration with El Tecolote, the award-winning bilingual newspaper in the Mission District. Students will learn about the role and function of community and ethnic news media while producing print, photo, video and au-dio stories for the newspaper and its website. El Tecolote is led by Editor Alexis Terrazas, a graduate of the SFSU Journalism Department. El Tecolote captured 15 awards in the San Francisco Press Club’s 2019 contest. The awardees included class participants Amanda Peterson and Maria Puras Arauzo and 2019 graduate Adelyna Tirado. A special editorial project is planned for Spring. Class capacity: 20. Prerequisites are Jour 221, Jour 300 and a passion for journalism.
