In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and in remembrance of those we’ve lost to injustice and brutality, we present the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus premiere of "HEAVY". In response to the shooting of George Floyd, McKenzie Coleman chose to express her anger and frustration in a poem. McKenzie identifies as a queer Black woman and is an elementary school music teacher in Charlotte, NC. She sent the poem to a colleague and friend, Dr. Gerald Gurss. He knew it had to be set to m...usic. He selected GALA Choruses legacy member Steve Milloy to compose the piece. Steve, a Black composer, has written songs expressing the black experience for decades. Steve set McKenzie’s lyrics to music and the introspective, illuminating "HEAVY" was born. In addition to the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, other choruses across the country signed on to co-commission this work: Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus, The Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, D.C., Gay Men's Chorus of Charlotte, N.C., Austin Gay Men's Chorus, Columbus Gay Men's Chorus, Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus, Heartland Men's Chorus, K.C., Boston Gay Men's Chorus, New York City Gay Men's Chorus, and Turtle Creek Chorale, Dallas. For this Virtual Choir video, singers from all of the above choruses came together to contribute. There are over 300 singers in the video.

We are proud to lend our voices to "What Will We Hear" - a new work by the incredible Andrew Lippa written specifically for SFGMC and featuring Kristin Chenoweth! Back in April 2020, when COVID-19 was first impacting our work, SFGMC hosted a donor meeting with Andrew Lippa in attendance. As staff discussed the situation and the uncertainty of that time, the conversation quickly turned to how we will know when its time for the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus to sing in public a...gain. Inspired by the discussion, Lippa wrote "What Will We Hear" and asked the phenomenal Kristin Chenoweth to record the song along with SFGMC. We're honored by Lippa and Chenoweth's commitment to the Chorus and for offering up inspiration in the form of both this song along with their overwhelming support and love for the Chorus and the communities we serve. This song premiered at our 42nd Birthday Celebration "It's Our Birthday" on October 17, 2020. We hope this song also inspires you at this moment in our history as well. We can't thank Andrew and Kristin enough.

As we continue to await the results of this contentious election, some realties are too stark to dismiss. Whatever the outcome, the work of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus is as important as ever and we will keep singing.
