FAQ: How is Safe Families for Children different from Foster Care? SFFC differentiates from Foster Care in several ways, mainly in that the families SFFC serves... have not abused or neglected their children - they are not families "in the system." They are parents who are voluntarily reaching out for help in their time of need. Parents maintain all their parental rights and visits/phone calls, etc are highly encouraged throughout the course of the hosting. For host families, the application process if abbreviated compared to that of a process to become a Foster Family and there is not the compensation that a Foster Family would receive to take in a child. Host families are there to become a type of extended family, to come alongside while parents get back on their feet, and to build relationship with a family that is in isolation. See more

We got a call recently where the mother had just had a heart attack and had to be hospitalized and she had nowhere for her kids to go. The kids weren’t in any ...sort of danger, their mother just a had a lack of support during that crisis. WHAT IF IT WASN'T A SHAMEFUL EXPERIENCE FOR FAMILIES TO ASK FOR HELP DURING A CRISIS? Throughout all of Southern California families are struggling to stay together because of a crisis. We are looking for families who have a few days or weeks to care for children ages 0-18 whose parents may be homeless, unemployed, hospitalized, incarcerated, or other crisis? With SAFE FAMILIES FOR CHILDREN ministry there is no state involvement, no money exchanged, and parents remain in full custody of their children, (this is not foster care). A mother who a SFFC host family helped 5 years ago recently reached out again. She just showed up at the SFFC office with a worn out and crumbled Safe Families ...business card. She said, I’ve kept this for years, I’ve lost a lot of things but I figured that I should just hang on to this, just in case. SFFC is there when just in case happens - the Church is there! See more

Recently, a host family hosted for a mom who was living in a homeless shelter for a couple of months. She was able to get into an apartment of her own with her ...4 kids and asked SFFC to host while she moved in. She was so excited to have a space of their own and was so grateful to Safe Families for the help they provided at a couple different turning points in her time at the shelter and how to help out while she moves! What a blessing to be a part of this family’s story! See more

This week a handful of volunteers stepped up to help with different hostings by bringing meals and helping with transportation to get kids to and from school ev...ery day. We know that sometimes the additional logistics of additional kids in your home can feel daunting and difficult, but that is why we have Family Friends to help and this week we are so blessed to see how the model of safe families works so well to allow host families to do what they do! Thanks to all SFFC volunteers in the many roles that you play. See more

How many cases do you have that the kids aren’t able to go back to their families? This is a question that our staff gets all the time when they are doing out...reach in the community. And the answer receives the best looks of shock. The reality is that 99% of the children hosted by Host Families go back to their families. By offering hospitality and opening their homes, Safe Families host Families are able to make a real and huge difference in helping to keep families together! See more
