The exhibition 'Bio Exuberance' can now be viewed by appointment and seen on Minnesota Street Project #Adjacent! https://minnesotastreetprojectadjacent.com//sfartsed-bio-/ Zoe Farmer | Bio Exuberance... What biology has to teach us, part 2 October 24, 2020 January 30, 2021 Animals, insects, and organisms offer many ways to challenge the conventional social constructions that we apply to our own species. The term biological exuberance, introduced by Dr. Bruce Bagemihl in his book of the same name, describes the surprising diversity of the animal kingdom, which encompasses a seemingly endless variety of gender and sexual fluidity. In part, this show is an exploration and celebration of wonder that fully embraces the diversity of what it is to be a biological being in an intricately interconnected network of organisms. And in part, it is a response to our confinement under the pandemic and an increased need for biophilic experiences. Biophilia, as defined by Edward O. Wilson, is the urge to affiliate with other life forms. Nature seems to be amplified now, as does our need to connect with it. Diversification equals strength. Collaboration amongst all living organisms leads to biological success and, by extension, a well-balanced, connected world. Our good friends at SCRAP-SF are hosting an exciting virtual discussion "Ruth Asawa: Through the Eyes of Her Children" Thursday, November 19, 7:00-8:00pm PST This online discussion brings together two of Asawa’s children Aiko Cuneo and Paul Lanier who will share rarely-seen images of the artist’s life in order to trace their memories of growing up with Ruth Asawa as their mother. Asawa, one of the Bay Area’s most iconic artists from the second half of the 20th century was al...so a tenacious advocate for arts education and the first Board President of SCRAP. Ruth Asawa: Through the Eyes of Her Children aims to further illuminate the impact of Asawa’s hands-on, community-based participation in San Francisco’s arts education landscape. This event is a ticketed fundraiser for SCRAP and will take place on November 19, 2020 from 7-8 PM PST. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ruth-asawa-through-the-eyes-of SCRAP is a creative reuse arts education nonprofit, materials depot, and workshop space founded in 1976 in San Francisco, California. SCRAP breathes new life into gently loved arts and crafts supplies, conducts programs and workshops, and reduces waste by diverting over 200 tons of materials heading to landfill every year. Since 1976, we have made affordable supplies available to teachers, artists, community organizations, and others in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. This includes over $75,000/yr worth of classroom supplies provided to teachers at our monthly Free Teacher’s Giveaways. SCRAP gives students of all ages the opportunity to learn and pass on the value of creative reuse. Scrap-sf.org #scrapsf #ruthasawa

Included in See / Change 2020 exhibition are nine assemblages by Taraneh Hemami from the series Witness. Looking at the histories of Market street through collected news clippings and found online images, Hemami reveals the street at the heart of San Francisco to be a place of parade, protest, and personal expression. Bodies are cut out, leaving just the anonymous, empty silhouettes. As a layered portrait of Market St emerges, many stories and memories collide. These assem...blages stand Witness to a place which the artist calls home. The exhibition See / Change 2020 can be seen on our website https://www.sfartsed.org/digital/see-change-2020/ and also on @minnesotastreetproject Adjacent Website. https://minnesotastreetprojectadjacent.com//sf-arts-ed-se/ This body of work was created for the Art on Market Street Kiosk Poster Series, funded by the San Francisco Arts Commission. Today we are looking at Lauren Elder's "R.I.P. A lament for recently extinct species", part of the See / Change 2020 virtual exhibition. The idea for this artwork came to Lauren when she visited Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who also designed New York City’s Central Park and much of UC Berkeley and Stanford University. Spending time in a place meant to mark the passing of humans, Lauren was taken by the wildlife... which surrounded her, reminding her of the thousands of species of animals which have gone extinct in the Anthropocene. This work consists of six pencil drawings alongside six papier-mâché grave markers created in collaboration with Vedra Alexander. Once working in public is possible again, Lauren plans to create a series of street actions in conjunction with the activist group Extinction Rebellion, activating this work. To see the rest of this series as well as other works in the See / Change 2020 exhibition, visit our website or Minnesota Street Project Adjacent Website. Image: R.I.P. We're thrilled to announce the launch of our virtual exhibition "See / Change 2020". https://www.sfartsed.org/digital/see-change-2020/ See / Change 2020 invites nine Bay Area artists to create an original work and then provide a creative prompt for the viewer to respond to that work. Each is or was a part of San Francisco Arts Education as a mentor through our programs. Their thoughtful and distinct responses are a testament to the deeply personal nature of art making. This e...xhibition was planned well in advance of the very big change that we are now experiencing in our world. I find it so heartening to know that these artists, with their deeply investigated practices and clear ideas about our world, all continue to educate young people. We are talking a lot about heroes in our community, now. These artists are among mine. - Emily Keeler, SFArtsED Artistic Director This exhibition can also be viewed on Minnesota Street Project Adjacent site https://minnesotastreetprojectadjacent.com//sf-arts-ed-se/ Participating artists: Alexis Arnold, Agelio Batle, Pete Belkin, Lauren Elder, Zoe Farmer, Renée Gertler, Taraneh Hemami, Abner Nolan, Richard Olsen, Erik Parra

With their intricate geometry, these quilts are considered to be one of the most significant contributions to the history of African American Art. From mid 19th century, these quilts were made from fabric scraps and were re-configured into dynamic compositions while keeping their maker's families warm in harsh conditions.
