Solano Voices: State should ease Covid restrictions for small-venue events Solano Voices: Bob Ecker My wife and I own a small winery in Solano County, Seven Artisans Winery. We do sell wine, of course, but live music events are the lifeblood of our business. Recently, we have resumed small performances using proper social distancing and requiring that everyone wear masks. People for the most part have been compliant and recognize the sacrifices needed. Our events are also hel...ping musicians put food on their tables. We are doing our utmost to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19 while keeping up the spirits of the community and trying desperately to stay in business. However, the state of California will not allow this, and counties, like Solano County, defer to the state. Yet, just this past Sunday (Sept. 6, 2020) a huge gathering of Christian musicians and their fans was held on the very steps of California’s Capitol and allowed to proceed. It is obvious from the videos that (incredibly) people were not practicing social distancing nor wearing masks. And the CHP let them party on. Can I expect the same blind eye for my next concert where we get, maybe, 75 people instead of 4,000? How is that equitable? Our great state must make some allowances for small gatherings to take place. Thousands of musicians, their families, rental facilities and venues up and down California are being killed. And may not return. Then what, more unemployment? Additionally, under the new four-tiered system, it seems that most of California will not be permitted to host any live music events for another three to four months at the earliest. By then, winter will have set in and it will be too cold for most outdoor events. When will facilities be able to host music events indoors? Covid-19 is a horrible disease and has caused suffering and death for hundreds and thousands of people. My own parents died of the disease within nine days of each other earlier this year. Gov. Gavin Newsom should consider acting on this soon. We do need to move forward, properly, fairly and quickly, so our way of life can continue. Plus, in the awful year, it’s essential to find some joy that live music provides. Bob Ecker is a writer and is co-owner of Seven Artisans Winery in Suisun Valley.
