A new temporary installation of roses on the exterior wall of Self Help Graphics & Art memorializes each of the 189+ lives taken by #COVID-19 in Boyle Heights and Unincorporated East LA and begins a handcrafted national memorial to the virus’ devastating impacts. The artwork is made from handcrafted red felt roses set against a mural by Oaxacan muralists Tlacolulokos and was installed during our 47th Annual Día de los Muertos season. Boyle Heights and Unincorporated East... LA are two of the worst-affected neighborhoods in Los Angeles County, and the location of the inaugural installation at SHG is a tribute to the community’s resilience and grief in dealing with #Coronavirus losses. Planning is underway for community installations across the country as well. Learn more about the Rose River Memorial project and how you can contribute with your own felt roses at www.roseriver.memorial. #RoseRiverMemorial #SHGDOD See more

Radical transformation can happen when you open your mind to the power of your vote. Our Youth Committee members Josiah O’Balles and Ashley Valle show us that you can be truly authentic in how you vote and speak truth to power in the process. This postcard takes a quote from a Malcolm X speech where he says ‘the ballot or the bullet explains itself.’ Change is gonna happen one way or another, let's work for everybody’s sake, that's the more peaceful option, said Josia...h. Wanting to personalize my piece, I decided to focus on two big components of my identity; being Latinx and punk. I also did this with the intention of targeting the Latinx community as I have noticed that we are very hesitant when it comes to getting into politics and voting. 'Pon-Pon Ponk' is a reference to a song by Molotov that seemingly mocks 'fashion' punks that focus on the look more than the ideology of this subculture. To be punk is to radicalize kindness, in caring for others, fighting and denouncing hate. Voting is punk, said Ashley. #GOTV #November3 #ElectionDay #SHGYouthCommittee #SHGAdvocacy See more

Voting is sacred and an intergenerational experience. From grandparents to grandchildren, make voting a tradition in your home. Our Youth Committee members Jackie Aguirre and Elizabeth Simon share what inspires them to vote family and the issues at hand. This postcard is inspired by my Abuelita Coyo. She has been voting ever since I can remember. Every election she calls my family to make sure they vote and is the person who taught all of us the importance of voting ...¡Vaya a votar!, said Jackie. For my collage, I used multiple images that represent some of the topics that are involved in this year's election. The topics I included are very important to me and are things I have helped advocate for through activism I do online. I included images that represent BIPOC and LGBT+ rights and some images on covid, as well as images about the green new deal and police reform. One of the images is a collage I made a few months back about Black lives that have been affected due to police brutality and/or racism. I also included two images on Women’s Rights, one being a clipart of different women and another that shows that it's the 100th year anniversary since women got the right to vote. Lastly, I added prop 15 because it is something that I have helped advocate for with the ACLU SoCal. I also added one about Biden. Biden is not the ideal candidate but I think he has the capacity to change during the presidency, but for now, we will settle for him, said Elizabeth. #GOTV #November3 #ElectionDay #SHGYouthCommittee #SHGYouthLed #SHGAdvocacy See more

You have the right to #vote on #electionday without being bullied or discriminated against. Make sure you vote for the ballot measures and the representatives who support the values that you stand for and the policies that you support. The polls close at 8 p.m., so make it count and get out and vote like your life depends on it! From street vendors to our allies from different cultures, our Youth Committee members Sabrina Mendoza and Andrea Tupa remind us to vote with ...our whole community in mind. Los vendedores are a huge part of many Latino-American’s lives. Many of these vendors watched us grow up and become adults. I want to encourage all the Mexican-Americans, Salvadoran-Americans, and all the Latinxs who are considered American citizens to go out and vote! Then, treat yourself to a mango from your vendor (if you could), said Sabrina. For the vote sign that I made, I felt that it was very important to write the word vote in different languages in order to reach out to different communities. There is no national language of America mandated and it is important to spread the message across to families whose main language is not English. I also incorporated the colors red, white, and blue. Even though Tupas is too young to vote, she wanted to contribute to the election, so she signed up to be a poll worker in her community on November 3rd, said Andrea. #GOTV #November3 #ElectionDay #SHGYouthCommittee #SHGYouthLed #SHGAdvocacy See more
