#TipTuesday ...Let’s chat about the 3 C’s of working with succulents . Color Compatibility Composition... . . When choosing plants to group together, it’s common to jump straight into choosing colors that please you first. There’s certainly nothing wrong with this, however, it’s equally important to make sure that the plants are compatible - ie: that they have the same sun exposure needs. Why is this important? Well, if you put a sun lover in a pot with a shade lover - one of them won’t be happy. Pairing compatible plants means everyone thrives. . . When you shop with us, we’ve done that work for you by grouping our plants into sun exposure and water zones. Our succulents are even further broken into full sun, morning sun, or shade zones. This way you can choose plants from the same zone and know that they will all enjoy the same environment. . Want to know more? Feel free to ask us any questions and tune in next week when we’ll address composition. #SecretGarden916 #KalanchoeTomentosaNigra #CrassulaSwaziensis See more

Cool concrete and warm terra-cotta ... go together like Milk and Honey, Fire and Ice , Yin and Yang !! . . Come find your next favorite pot.
Crotons are plants that know how to dress for a Sacramento October. 8am it’s 50 degrees - let’s dress cute for Fall! 3pm it’s 90 degrees and you’re back to a tank top!! . . But seriously, Crotons #CodiaeumVariegatum, come in a range of leaf shapes and colors and make great houseplants. They like bright indirect light and enjoy some extra humidity so consider a pebble tray. Water when the soil is dry halfway down the pot. . . Pro Tip - crotons don’t like to be moved around frequently and can show their displeasure by throwing down some leaves in protest. So give them a bright spot they can call their own and watch them reward you with a display of beautiful colors.
You spin me right round, baby Right round like a record, baby Right round, round, round . I know, now you’ll have that song in your head all day! But then you’ll also be thinking of us and our awesome celestial wind spinners too! Worth remembering - They’re MAGICAL!
PLANT NOW - If you want an awesome garden next year! . . Planting your perennials now gives them a HUGE head start! The soil and day time temperatures are still warm enough for active root growth. Plants that get established now are much better equipped to handle the heat next summer. So stop by soon and pick up your favorites!
With mugshots like these ... ... it’s easy to pick your favorite out of the lineup. . . We just received in a restock of our popular Secret Garden mugs. Leave a comment below and tell us which is your favorite? #ShopSmall #SupportLocal
We believe in a softer, gentler approach. . . Last week a customer commented that the proliferation of butterflies in our nursery was a testament to how we do things at The Secret Garden. Such a beautiful way to articulate our commitment to an integrated pest management approach and the absence of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides in our nursery. #RespectTheEarth #SaveThePollinators
Golden Hour with the Senior Sunset Squad . . Cephalocereus Senilis (aka Old Man Cactus) gets its name from the Latin word senilis meaning old man. These are native to Mexico and will tolerate our Sacramento summer heat and temperate winters well. The fine white hairs that cover these guys serve as protection from the hot sun by day and then offer a nice warm blanket to survive temperatures as low as -10. . . Fun fact: The more sunlight this plant receives, the longer the hairs will grow!
