Tips for Downsizing With all that’s going on and the need to stay at home, why not put this time to good use? If you’re anything like me, you have thought of making a move but when faced with the overwhelming job of going through your stuff, the idea is quickly abandoned. Worse is when you really do need to change your living situation but feel so overwhelmed that you can’t seem to get started or stay with it.... Here are 5 tips to, not only get you started, but to also get it done! * Start small - This may sound silly but believe me it works! Go ahead and walk over to that overcrowded closet and commit 20 minutes to organizing or maybe even throwing away some items. Check the clock and tell yourself that you will stop in 20 minutes. If you want to keep going that’s ok too. Just know it’s ok to do the 20 minutes only. You will be amazed if you keep repeating this process 1-3 times per week, how far you will get and how much better you feel about the process. * Sort into 3 piles - 1)items you will take with you 2)items you would like to sell or give away 3)trash * Consider giving away those treasures to your children now so you can experience their enjoyment. If you have a lot of items and no one in the family wants them, the choice is to donate or sell them but that choice can be made later... keep doing your 20 minutes! * Pat yourself on the back - Each time you complete your 20 minute segment, congratulate yourself! You can keep going but be sure you don’t exhaust yourself. If you do, you may not want to keep going. Break it up.. have a cup of tea, take a walk, watch your favorite show. * Each day, ask yourself... Can I commit to 20 minutes if I can stop after that? Usually the answer is yes. If not, make it 15 minutes or even 10. The point is to keep it small enough to keep the overwhelm monster away. After 2 weeks, look back and see what you’ve done and congratulate yourself for your progress. Your success is in the progress, not the final result. The final result will happen if you follow this plan. Nancy Puder is the founder of Sea Coast Seniors and also a real estate broker associate with Keller Williams Central Coast Realty.
