Encouraging news for real, lasting solutions to the border pollution! The Water Board is working closely with USEPA to identify options and get facilities built to divert and treat waste flows at the border and pursue long overdue source control measures in Tijuana. https://www.feinstein.senate.gov//index.cfm/press-releases
Happy Earth Day! So much has changed since the first Earth Day was celebrated. While there are no shortage of environmental threats and challenges, today is also about celebrating some of our successes. In 1992, groundwater in Mission Valley was seriously polluted by releases of petroleum liquids from the Mission Valley Terminal. The Mission Valley Terminal covers 66 acres near Friars Road and I-15 with 30 tanks holding as much as 680,382 barrels of refined petroleum produ...cts. Pollutants of concern in the contaminated groundwater in the 1990s and 2000s included benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), and tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA). Nasty stuff that limited the potential use of the groundwater and threatened the San Diego River. Today, as a result of 28 years of hard work the groundwater in Mission Valley is restored! The groundwater may now developed as a potential municipal water supply and the stadium property can be safely redeveloped to serve San Diego in the 21st century. With water scarcity a possible outcome of climate change, restoration of local groundwater resources like the Mission Valley aquifer are critical to our future.
