Canyon Crest Academy’s Amy Villanova will be honored with the 2020 CMEA: California Music Educators Association (CMEA) Byron Hoyt/Don Schmeer Band Educator Award, the top award honoring excellence in instrumental education and performance in the state of California. Eligible educators for the honor includes all music educators in public and private schools, colleges and universities in the state of California. Villanova, the Coordinator for Instrumental Music, Wind Ensemble, ...Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Band at Envision Instrumental Music, Canyon Crest Academy, becomes the first educator within the San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) to be honored with the state’s Band Educator Award since its inception in 2000. She is just the third educator working in San Diego County to be selected for the award alongside Jeri Webb (2017, Westview High School) and Jeanne Christensen (2016, Mira Mesa High School). It is a such an honor to have been selected by my peers to represent the CMEA Byron Hoyt/Don Schmeer Band Educator Award for the state of California, and it is a testament to the incredibly hard work and pride that our students put into learning and refining their craft, as well as to the incredible team of music professionals I have the privilege of working with in our school and in our district, Villanova said. I am so grateful for the opportunities afforded to me, and the amazing friendships I have developed, all because I chose to try playing flute in the elementary school band. Villanova will be publicly honored on February 18 at a virtual event in conjunction with the All-State Music Education Conference hosted by the CMEA. Also during the event will be performances of the 2021 California All-State Ensembles which will include students from CCA, Carmel Valley Middle School, Earl Warren Middle School, Pacific Trails Middle School and Torrey Pines High School after successful auditions.

San Dieguito Union High School District believes strongly in equity and treating all of our students, families, staff, and community members with dignity and respect. This is the official Facebook Page used to share information with our community. Any other page, whether using district logos or information, is not sanctioned by the district. The Governing Board believes that the diversity that exists among the district's community of students, staff, parents/guardians, and co...mmunity members is integral to the district's vision, mission, and goals. This commitment is expressed in a new Board Policy on Equity that was approved in September 2020. Additionally, the Governing Board believes in hearing the voices of students, therefore a special student summit is being held on January 13. The summit will include our student board members, student government representatives, peer assistance mentors, and other students. Two elected Trustees will be in attendance to hear directly from the students about their concerns, thoughts, and questions.

Canyon Crest Academy senior Derek Ma is receiving many plaudits and recognition for his 11-minute documentary "The Covid Relief Effort From Asian Americans" that spotlights the good things Chinese Americans have done during the pandemic. (WATCH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt32sWd02Jw) "As an Asian American, it was sad to see other people like me face discrimination for something unjustified during the Covid pandemic," Ma told NBC 7. "With so much negativity, I wanted to create something that was in contrast positive and showed the good contributions that we've made as Asian Americans." I want to thank everyone in our school district community for the passion and dedication to ensuring our students have a successful education. We continue to navigate through a time without precedent. The work we have done to build and deliver our Distance Learning Model has been successful in many ways, and we have data to support that. We also know that we have students who want to be on campus for both academic and social/emotional reasons. In anticipation of expanding on-...campus access for students, at yesterday’s meeting, our Board of Trustees adopted a resolution that directed all certificated teachers to return to work on campus by Thursday, October 29, 2020. Additionally, the following recommendations were made to the Board of Trustees at the meeting: Continue to implement the Board action in quarter 1 bringing more students on our campuses Continue with the Distance Learning Model allowing students to learn on campus or at home Middle Schools - Provide a choice for students to be on campus beginning in quarter 2 with a target date of 1 day per week on or before November 9 and 2 days per week on or before November 30 Comprehensive High Schools - Provide a choice for students to be on campus beginning in quarter 2 with a target date of 1 day per week on or before November 16 and 2 days per week on or before December 7 Plan for a return to on campus instruction for all students, with a distance learning option for those students who cannot access campus, for quarter 3 See the entire Superintendent's Update at https://www.sduhsd.net/announcements/?capostid=28332

Listening to our community, and reflecting on what we have learned, we believe it is important for us to reconvene an expanded reopening committee for San Dieguito Union High School District. This expanded reopening committee will include parents, teachers, students, district and school administrators, support personnel, board members (Kristin Gibson and Melisse Mossy), and medical professionals. The committee will continue to meet as we monitor the San Diego County Public He...alth Orders and the documentation from the California Department of Public Health. Plans have already been implemented that have returned groups of students back to campus and will continue to return more students. The initial purpose of this committee will be to review the current Distance Learning Model, review other models being implemented across the state, explore opportunities for on-campus activities, and explore options for a safe increase in student access to our campuses. In opening the 2020-21 school year, our focus was on implementing our Distance Learning Model with daily live interaction and instruction. This was done with an understanding of the action taken by the Board of Trustees on July 30, 2020. Since that action was taken in July, there have not been any changes in the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Mandate and Guidelines for K-12 Schools, therefore, the Board of Trustees voted at its Board Meeting on September 17, 2020, to continue the Distance Learning Model during the second quarter.
