Calling all Social Workers in San Diego County Are you looking to get more involved in the advocacy that is taking place in our streets? Do you wish there was a way you could begin to impact change on a greater level? Do you believe Social Workers must meet this moment in time in our society and emerge as leaders in local policy? If so, we encourage you to join SWEL, Social Workers for Equity and Leadership! We are excited to announce the creation of this new Social Worker ...group in San Diego and think it is time we unite and show up in the movement towards social justice. We have some ambitious plans for SWEL and are presenting a call to action for Social Workers and like-minded allies to join us as we establish ourselves, build relationships within the community, and search for better ways to serve San Diego. If you are interested in getting involved please give us a follow on social media, share our information widely, and stay tuned for posts about upcoming events! CONGRATULATIONS, Drs. Zúñiga and Pitpitan! Drs. Zúñiga and Pitpitan shared great news that they were awarded a 5-year R25 NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) grant titled "Addiction Scientists Strengthened though Education and Training (ASSET)." The overall goal of the program is to achieve diversity in substance use research and addiction science, also ultimately to promote diversity in the upper echelons of academia. Drs. Eileen Pitpitan and María Luisa Zúñiga designe...d the ASSET Program to provide junior investigators with underrepresented minority backgrounds (e.g., racial/ethnic minorities) with research knowledge, skills, and mentored career development training that will build their long-term confidence and resilience to become independent researchers and leaders in the field of substance use and addiction science. ASSET will also help to improve long-term scientific engagement of ethnically and racially diverse addiction scientists to meet the growing U.S. need for effective prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. Scholars in the program will benefit from the participation and mentorship of over 20 experienced and diverse faculty members from both SDSU and UCSD and will also benefit from the wealth of existing programs and resources from both universities.
