Study on Neurodiversity and Intervention Patrick Dwyer and Susan Rivera are conducting a study to explore what autism researchers, professionals, family members, and people on the spectrum think about neurodiversity and autism intervention. They are currently looking for more study participants, and would appreciate it if you are able to take part in the survey yourself and/or forward this information to your contacts! Survey Link: https://ucdavis.co1.qualtrics.com/j/form/S...V_8227gTZMioA77SZ Further details: The concept of neurodiversity and its implications for autism supports and interventions continues to be actively debated by stakeholders in the autism world. Researchers at UC Davis are interested in learning about the opinions of autism stakeholders regarding these topics. Stakeholders include autistic people/people with autism (formally diagnosed or self-identified) and their family members, as well as professionals, clinicians, and researchers working in the autism field. As long as you accept cookies, it is possible to leave the survey and return to it up to a week later if you use the same browser and computer. Participants in this study have the option of entering a random drawing with a 1 in 25 chance of winning a $25 Amazon gift card. The survey should take about 30-60 minutes to complete. Please contact Patrick Dwyer ([email protected]) if you have any questions about this study.

A new method to evaluate autism-linked genes could reveal which ones are most useful to screen for. Researchers presented the unpublished findings virtually at the 2021 International Society for #Autism Research annual meeting. https://www.spectrumnews.org//new-ranking-system-flags-cl/
People who experience an autism-specific form of anxiety also tend to have an unusually small amygdala, a brain region associated with emotion processing and fear. The finding supports the theory that some #autistic people have a distinct form of anxiety. https://www.spectrumnews.org//anxiety-specific-to-autism-/
Children with #autism traits tend to show agitation, excitability, decreased sleep and other signs of hypomania in adolescence, according to a new twin study. The association is higher in identical twins than in fraternal twins. https://www.spectrumnews.org//childhood-autism-traits-lin/

Undocumented Mexican mothers of children with autism: navigating the healthcare and educational service systems In the field of education and healthcare, researchers and educators attempt to close the diagnosis and service gaps that exist for low-resourced, underrepresented families of children with autism. One group of families particularly difficult to engage in research and interventions is undocumented immigrant families. We know little about whether these families are ob...taining a timely diagnosis or services for their children with autism. Our study examined how undocumented Mexican immigrant mothers of children with autism navigate the special education and health care systems, challenges they face in doing so, and the helpers who assist in navigating the process. https://www.tandfonline.com//10.1080/20473869.2020.1850159
