The wait and anticipation are over. We’ve cleaned up the mess from our construction and opened our doors. We appreciate your patience with our disruption to the usual program in the student services building. For those of you who weren’t able to make our Grand Opening Event on October 25th, 2018, we wanted to provide a brief recap and invite you to come and check out the new space. Student Posters Among the featured events to wrap up our Hispanic Heritage Month was a Student Poster Session. Held in the LRC lobby, Span 215 students created posters and presented in both English and Spanish on our Latinx leaders in the U.S. Centered around acknowledging the contributions of the Latinx community in the scientific, economic, and cultural development of this country, students highlighted these leaders. We were absolutely thrilled that we would be able to highlight two Campus Conexiones speakers during our Hispanic Heritage Month. Our second speaker for the fall semester was Katherine Solchaga, Publicity Project Assistant for Title III/HSI STEM Conexiones. We were pleased to see the terrific turn out of attendees to hear about Katherine’s journey and connect. We have certainly come to expect a rich and vulnerable experience with this speaker series each semester, and Katherine held up the bar. Back by popular demand, and professor dedication, Proyecto Éxito HSI/Title V Grant, Math Course Re-designer Professor Juan Bernal along with Professor Kelly Spoon will be facilitating Mathletics Workshops throughout the fall semester. Developing our Mathletics program and follow-up workshops are two of our efforts in support of our objective to increase the percentage of students earning a ‘C’ or better in basic skills math courses and increase the percentage of students successfully completing a college-level math course. As many of you may have noticed, possibly with annoyance, AVANZA (I4-203) has been closed for most of the summer. Although open for student engagement at this time, we are still wrapping up some finishing touches. Our final large piece of construction included installing a new door across from the elevators that enters directly into our student workshop space, and a sliding wall to separate the workshop space from the rest of the engagement center that will allow students to continue utilizing the community space simultaneously while workshops are being held. Since the opening of the Learning Opportunities for Transformation (LOFT) on the fourth floor of the Learning Resource Center (LRC) in the second year of our grant (April 2016), Proyecto Éxito has maintained a commitment and dedication toward professional learning for our Mesa Community. It is our continued goal and desire to increase opportunities for our faculty to participate in career enriching and student centered development that remains current with the latest evidence based practices. When we think about what it means to be a Hispanic Serving Institution we know that we want to engage our students. We have heard time and time again how important it has been for staff, students, faculty, and administrators alike to have people who looked like them and sounded like them to be role models and mentors. Through our Campus Conexiones Speaker Series we hope to open the door to this experience. [ 306 more words ] https://mesaproyectoexito.wordpress.com//campus-conexione/

Established as a law on August 17, 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month was adopted to pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. It is recognized each year from September 15 through October 15. September 15 was chosen as the starting point to commemorate the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Talk about a whirlwind of activity. We started off with our first ever Night-Time Mathletics, an abbreviated version of our winter program for 2 hours each day, over 4 days, July 30th-August 2nd. We had 20 faithful attendees who stuck it out from 6 PM to 8PM each evening, coming from class or a day of work; they showed dedication and commitment. In our quest to serve all incoming students here at Mesa we continue to be flexible with the coordination of our CRUISE events. Each semester our goal is to exceed the number of students that we served the previous semester. We aimed for 225 students each week this summer, and quickly discovered just how over ambitious this was. In the first week, July 10th-12th, we served 135 students and were enlightened to the limitations on our space with some of our more interactive activities. As Proyecto Éxito continues to seek ways to grow our programs and support moving them toward institutionalization, we keep asking ourselves How else can we meet our students’ needs and connect them to the campus? Creating Rich Unique Intellectual Student Experiences (CRUISE) is now in its third year. In an attempt to reach out to parents and family members and include them in their student’s experience we have offered a brief introduction seminar as part of our 3-day CRUISE sessions.
