Humanity has always moved through our world with curiosity and fascination. We always want to know what’s over the horizon and why the world works the way it does. We believe that science is a process, a collection of methods that humans have developed to better understand the natural world and navigate our way through it. That is never more evident than in the story of how we explored the seas. So, why not sit down and enjoy this virtual voyage of exploration. https://youtu.be/a-UZ9pVE7PU

This Giving Tuesday we are so grateful for our members, visitors and community of supporters. We may be limited to get away these days, so until then, we give you a chance to travel virtually to the waterfront with our new 24/7 live streaming EarthCam. Near or far, a front row view to history, adventure, culture, education, entertainment and our environment. We still have challenges to surmount, and these may well exceed anything we have encountered thus far. Stay healthy and... let’s pull through this together. PASSION. PRIDE. PRESERVATION CARRIES ON. Even though the Museum is closed due to COVID-19, our fleet needs to be maintained so that our cherished vessels are preserved. Adhering to all safety and health protocols, volunteers have been returning to our San Diego downtown waterfront location to care for the vessels. David Fairbank, Mike Wolter, and Isaac Wills have been focusing their efforts on Medea’s brightwork. Seen here, long-time Volunteer David Fairbank with the Maritime... Museum of San Diego before 1997. The last active warship from World War I: the steam yacht Medea was designed originally for Scottish gentry. She was bought by the French Navy and served as a convoy escort and in anti-submarine patrols from June 1917 to the war’s end. Medea remains a living echo of this dramatic past.

John Walsh, a member of the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s Education staff, wrote the following poem as a riff on John Masefield's very famous "Sea Fever" poem, hence why he called it "C-Fever" in reference to COVID-19. John mastered the longing we have to return to the waterfront and to experience how much we are all connected by the sea.
