Thanks to Mr. Bobby Ruiz for creating a special lowrider award to be presented by SD Fire-Rescue at the annual Tribal car show in Barrio Logan. The show took place on Thursday evening and the SDFD shift commander, Dep. Chief Zombro, attended and selected this 1952 Chevy as the SDFD top choice. One sweet ride! #lowriders #art #community

Once again, our generous friend David Bellerpeche has gifted SD Fire-Rescue with a great donation! David donated two more sets of LED headlights to SDFD apparatus at stations 11 in Golden Hill and 7 in Barrio Logan. David has donated a few of these special headlights. He was raised here in town and feels strongly about supporting SDFD. These LED headlights provide better visibility for our crews when navigating the late night and early morning hours on the road. Thank you David! #generosity #sandiegan

SD Fire-Rescue lifeguards and San Diego Police Department want you to be aware of many individuals who are illegally operating businesses in the Mission Bay area including illegally renting vessels. Over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, more than 30 vessels were impounded by lifeguards and SDPD because the owners did not possess the appropriate license to rent the vessels. All companies doing business at Mission Bay Park are required to possess a valid license issued by ...the City of San Diego which can be obtained through the Real Estate Assets Dept. SD Municipal Code 63.20.20 is the relevant section and individuals can and will be cited. And the impound fees can add up! Businesses that are licensed for Mission Bay Park are only brick and mortar operations; you cannot be a licensed renter if you operate from your car or home. In addition, please be aware that renting from an unlicensed lessee could have serious consequences if you crash and cause or suffer injuries or cause damage to a vessel. Unlicensed lessees do not carry insurance! Thanks to the San Diego Padres for honoring first responders at Tuesday night's game. SD Fire-Rescue firefighter/paramedic Josh Miranda sang the National Anthem and our honor guard presented the colors. And 40+ year California State Parks lifeguard Ed Vodrazka threw out the first pitch. Play ball!

Here are some shots of SD Fire-Rescue engine and truck 10 crews training on commercial roof ventilation. During their first year, SDFD firefighters are assigned to dedicated training stations. The crews at those stations work with the probationary firefighters to accomplish training that will prepare them for their careers. Roof ventilation can be particularly challenging at commercial buildings. #firefighter #training #roofventilation

In June, SD Fire-Rescue promoted several captains and engineers but newly promoted engineer Brandon Taylor was out of town for the ceremony. Instead he received his own shield and badge presentation at the executive command staff meeting on Tuesday. We were pleased that special guests were in attendance as well! Congratulations! #SDFD #fireengineer #firefighter

A neighborhood parade just isn't the same without a shiny red fire engine! Thanks to Scripps Ranch and Allied Gardens for inviting SD Fire-Rescue crews (and the fire chief) to participate in the Fourth of July festivities.

Show the kids where the lifeguard towers are or familiarize them with other landmarks nearby. They can go to a lifeguard, police officer or firefighter to ask for help if they get lost. Each year around the #FourthofJuly thousands go to hospital emergency rooms because of fireworks injuries. Not to mention the brush fires started by illegal fireworks. All fireworks are illegal in the city and county of San Diego. Please leave fireworks to the professionals. There are a lot of public fireworks shows around town this year. We want everyone in San Diego to have a safe and enjoyable Independence Day! #safetyfirst

SD Fire-Rescue lifeguards want you to enjoy your time at the beach. Lt. Brian Clark has recommendations on how to keep the kids safe. Be aware, the surf will increase over the weekend and peak on the fourth. This means increased rip current activity as well. #safetyfirst #fourthofjuly

#fireworks #safetyfirst

On Thursday, more than 150 San Diego Fire-Rescue firefighters and lifeguards who are emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and/or paramedics received the first in a two-dose series of the COVID-19 vaccine. This is a collaborative effort between the SD County Health and Human Services Agency and SDFD. This vaccination program will continue until all first responders in the metro zone have been vaccinated or offered the COVID-19 vaccine. The metro zone includes Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City, Poway and Coronado fire departments.

On the morning of Dec. 5, 2020, SD Fire-Rescue dispatch trainee Marla Pollock-Garcia and her trainer Aaron Richard received a call about a baby who wasn’t breathing at a home in Poway. Marla began giving CPR instructions. She stayed on the call until SD Sheriff’s deputies arrived and took over performing CPR on the one-year-old. Shortly thereafter, a Poway Fire Dept. crew arrived and transported the child to a hospital. While the child was being transported, SDFD dispatchers ...Andrea Hartge and Harold Elevado received additional information about the baby from the Sheriff’s Dept. They relayed the information to the paramedics who were able to administer medication. As a result of this fantastic teamwork, the child survived! SDFD dispatchers are proud of their day-to-day work but CPR saves are especially touching and memorable thus, they are posted on a window in the dispatch center. Thanks to Poway Fire Chief Canavan and SDFD Chief Stowell for visiting the dispatch center to recognize these wonderfully dedicated professional dispatchers! #dispatcher #excellence #CPRsave See more

On Monday, SD Fire-Rescue Chief Stowell congratulated our newest deputy chief. Chief Robert Logan is a native San Diegan who has been with SDFD for 20 years. He’s very highly regarded and known as one of the most squared away members of our department. Chief Logan was the program manager for the HAZMAT team but beginning this week, he’s the deputy chief responsible for the Special Operations Division which includes (among other units) air operations, the bomb squad and the metro arson strike team. We look forward to Chief Logan’s continued leadership and unwavering commitment to the employees of SDFD and the people they serve in San Diego. Please join us in congratulating him. #firefighter #leadership

SD Fire-Rescue station 50 is now in service for the first time ever! The crew at this station will serve North University City and surrounding communities. It’s three levels, has ten dorm rooms, a gym, locker room, kitchen, outdoor eating area, workshop and a training classroom (to name just a few amenities). Station 50 totals about 14,000 square feet. This morning the crew performed the traditional push-in of the engine and went into service for the first time ever. The... video gives you a glimpse inside this beautiful facility. We regret that the pandemic prevents us from having an open house at this time since City facilities are closed to the public. But we will schedule an event in the future! In the meantime, thanks to all the City employees and the contractor who made this project a reality. #firefighters #readytoserve See more

At about 1:40 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, SD Fire-Rescue dispatchers received calls about a fire in the 1100 block of Coast Blvd. SDFD crews arrived within about six minutes and found a residential structure fully engulfed in flames and smoke. This residence had been boarded up for many years. Firefighters were forced to fight the fire from the exterior because it had fully engulfed the home. There are residences and other structures nearby by but the aggressive efforts by our crews prevented the fire from spreading. The fire was knocked down at 2:20 a.m. SDFD metro arson strike team investigators responded and have ruled the cause of the fire ‘undetermined’ at this time. The estimated damage to the home is $175k. One firefighter suffered a minor, non-burn injury and was not transported. #firefighters

October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month and we're highlighting some survivors of sudden cardiac arrest whose lives were saved by AEDs! In 2004, Steve was surfing off of Sunset Cliffs when he experienced a sudden cardiac arrest and fell into the water. Luckily he was surfing in a crowd and fast acting strangers swam him to shore. Two of the people on the beach knew CPR and were able to perform tandem CPR. A lifeguard vessel equipped with an AED arrived shortly after,... and the AED was used on Steve to jolt his heart back to rhythm as he was airlifted to the hospital. Thanks to the heroic actions of strangers and the use of the AED, 16 years later Steve is still enjoying a healthy life, surfing daily in Nicaragua. Visit sandiego.gov/sdprojectheartbeat, where you can learn more about hands-only CPR, CPR and AED trainings provided by the team, and purchase your own AED through our partner, AED Brands. #AED #savealife #SuddenCardiacArrest
