As we continue our focus on Hotel Churchill for the month, we're excited to share some of the rich history behind the iconic building... - Hotel Churchill wa...s originally 6 stories with the 7th floor added in the 1920s! - A medieval theme was added in the 1980s. - Hotel Churchill was vacant starting in 2005 and in disrepair before restoration efforts began. - The iconic 32’ wide x 10’ tall Hotel Churchill sign was added in the 1940s. It weighed nearly 2,000 pounds! We removed the sign with a crane and our subcontractor, San Diego Electric Sign, Inc, spent almost a year restoring it back to its original glory. It now shines bright and serves as a reminder of the wonderful project and San Diego’s rich and diverse history. Today... Hotel Churchill features 72 affordable apartments that will remain affordable through the next 65 years, 72 federal sponsor-based housing vouchers, 56 apartments for formerly homeless veterans, and 16 apartments for transitional youth ages 18-25, including former foster youth and adults exiting the corrections system.
