Last week, two people were killed in our region by law enforcement. On Mon., Oct. 19, a SDPD officer shot and killed an unarmed Latino man who, according to media reports, was experiencing a mental health crisis. On Fri., Oct. 23, a U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and killed a Latino man at the border. Few details are known about either fatal shooting. Nevertheless, each represents a tragic loss of life. The ACLU is paying close attention to events as they unfold. We echo calls for transparency and accountability from law enforcement. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families during this difficult time.

We will continue this fight always.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear the Trump administration’s request to review a ruling that blocked the president’s attempt to keep undocumented immigrants from being counted in the U.S. census for the purpose of apportioning the U.S. House of Representatives. Undocumented immigrants are people and nothing President Trump does or says changes that fact. The policy is a discriminatory attack on immigrants and immigrant communities, and particularly immigrant communities of color. The case will be heard November 30.
