Today, we as an organization grieve the passing of Mel Canales. Mel was one of the originals, joining the Vanguard during it’s charter year in 1967 at the age of 15. He marched in the mellophone section from 1967-1972, and went on to teach the brass from 1972-1976. Mel remained a supportive alumni and friend to the organization in the many years that followed, and was inducted into the Vanguard Hall of Fame in 2013. On January 5, 2021, Mel sadly passed away from complications... due to Covid-19. We will remember Mel by his warm, humble and kind presence, honor him as an integral part of our Vanguard history, and thank him for the love he gave to our community. Our hearts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. If you have any memories you would like to tell of Mel, please feel free to share. "Isn't it rich, aren't we a pair? 2020 was an unconventional year to say the least, and while we did not have performers on the field, we still had an incredible cast of members who deserve to bear recognition for representing Vanguard during the year 2020. Our membership is comprised of POC, LGBQT+, activists, allies, essential workers, teachers, artists and most importantly, family. They’ve shown unceasing camaraderie towards their fellow teammates, and we as an organization stand with them as they lead us... into the future. This patch was conceptualized by members of our educational staff, the design rendered by one of our members, with production and distribution made possible thanks to our Alumni Association.

The Vanguard Music & Performing Arts (VMAPA) family invites you to celebrate the holidays together for our first ever virtual holiday showcase on December 19th! This holiday season, we are breaking through the physical barriers that separate us to come together and share the profound impact that the performing arts have on all of our lives.... TEAM FUNDRAISING COMPETITION As part of the showcase, we are hosting a friendly fundraising competition which will start on November 1 and will run until December 1. For some, the loss of our current seasons has felt at times obsolete. And for some, Vanguard feels so far away. But the power of Wayne's storytelling brings us back, and helps us take a step back, to see Vanguard in it's entirety. It's rich history, it's triumphs, ...it's people and the collective perserverance we have that will lead us into the future. After learning about the passing of Herbert Kretzmer, lyricist of Les Miserables, we’re taking this Tradition Tuesday to acknowledge his work and pay forward a special Vanguard moment in tribute. Herbert Kretzmer was born in South Africa, his parents Jewish Immigrants who fled czarist Russia. He fulfilled his passion for music by writing songs after moving to London. When Les Miserables came to the West End in 1985 after failing in Paris, where musical theatre was not pop...ular, Kretzmer was tasked with reimagining this French musical for a British audience. The lyrics Kretzmer wrote not only resonated with British audiences, but with audiences everywhere, as they captured the spirit of the people. An angry people, fighting for freedom and revolution. This takes us to a moment not known to many, but lasting for those who were there. At the culmination of SCV’s 2013 Les Miserables season, the colorguard left retreat, lock in step, parting the crowd as they sang in unison Kretzmer’s lyrics: Do you hear the people sing? Singing a song of angry men? Happy Hanukkah! On this last night of Hanukkah, we celebrate the end of 2020’s Festival of Lights. The origins of this Jewish holiday dates back to the 2nd century BCE when the Maccabees successfully recaptured the Temple of Jerusalem from the Greeks. Despite there only being enough sacred oil for one day of flames for the temple’s menorah, the candles miraculously burned for 8 days. Tonight, people all around the world celebrate the 8th night by lighting the last candle, singing prayers, eating food fried in oil, playing Dreidel, and eating gelt. Congratulations to our creative director, Michael Gaines, on being presented the Adolph DeGrauwe Legacy award last night by The Cavaliers for his years of service to the organization! Michael’s history with The Cavaliers is truly extraordinary, and helped shape both the activity and his students for the better. This award is much deserved, and we are so honored to have Michael on our Vanguard team!

In the wake of yesterday’s news, we want to send our hearts out to the members. While the opportunity for us to connect and create with each other in a safe and innovative new way is on the horizon, we realize it cannot replace a summer spent marching on the field under the stadium lights, where many of our hearts belong. This year is giving us the chance to prepare for an even better future, still, time can be unkind, and the harsh reality is that some of our beloved members... will not be able to return to the field. To those members, we wish we could freeze time for you, but please know this: Vanguard will continue on because of your legacy. This generation has left an indelible mark in our drum corps history that no extraordinary circumstance could ever take away. VMAPA & BDPA: The Future Starts NOW - Our Roadmap to 2022: With the current state of the pandemic, combined with the distance and limited performance opportunities that DCI has planned to date, both Blue Devils Performing Arts (BDPA) and Vanguard Music and Performing Arts (VMAPA) have decided not to travel to Indianapolis for the showcase events on August 12-14, 2021. Although we will not be in Indianapolis, both organizations will still plan exciting talent development and ...educational opportunities for Summer 2021. Our intention is to use next year to help us bring the highest caliber programs to the field in Indianapolis in 2022 - DCI’s 50th anniversary season. To that end, planning for 2022 has already begun. Tradition Tuesday VANGUAAARD! A quintessential Vanguard experience: the Vanguard yell. This tradition was born in 1993, credited to the Cadet Corps members whose idea it was to yell it from the stands during a silent hold. The audiences eventually caught on and well, the rest is history. Some years it is built into the design of the show, others it is not, but our fans always seem to find a way. Tomorrow, one of our Interim Executive Directors, Jeremy Van Wert, will be sitting down with Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor for a half-hour live discussion! This will be a Facebook Live event and will feature VMAPA and the struggle we have endured during the COVID-19 pandemic. The conversation will be about the history of Vanguard in the south bay area, what we do, how COVID has impacted our organization, how the City of Santa Clara has been a wonderful partner to us, and the future of our organization. People can tune in to this event by following the City of Santa Clara Facebook page and watching live. The video will also be posted up there if people aren't available at noon on Friday.
