A Winter Spare the Air Alert has been issued for December 8th-10th in the Bay Area. Wood burning is banned both indoors and outdoors from Friday, December 8, through Sunday, December 10. Air quality in the Bay Area is forecast to be unhealthy. It is illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood or other solid fuels in fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire-pits, or other wood-burning devices. This wood-burning ban will be in effect for Alameda, Contra... Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southern Sonoma and southwestern Solano Counties. (Visit www.sparetheair.org//Todays-Air-Quali/Reporting-Zones.aspx to see if your city is located within the Air District.) Winter air pollution is mainly caused by particulates or soot pollution from wood smoke. Smoke from wood-burning fires is linked to illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and lung disease, and is especially harmful for children and the elderly. For more information about the Wood Burning Rule, or to check before you burn, visit www.sparetheair.org or call 1-877-4NO-BURN.

Campus Community, with Thanksgiving Day coming up soon, we wanted to share a few cooking safety tips to those that may be considering the deep frying route in cooking your turkey. From the U.S. Fire Administration, the five dangers of deep frying a turkey: 1. Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil across a large area.... 2. An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside. 3. A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter. 4. Turkey fryers can easily overheat and start a fire. 5. The pot, lid and handles of a turkey fryer can get dangerously hot and cause burn injuries. We've also included a "Recipe Card" for deep frying that you may find useful. Happy Thanksgiving!

To those in our Santa Clara University Campus Community who are certified in CPR, the American Heart Association (AHA) published updated CPR Guidelines today in cooperation with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). The 2017 AHA Focused Updates on Adult and Pediatric Basic Life Support and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Quality emphasize that more people will survive cardiac arrest if the following three recommendations are acted upon: Emergency dispatc...hers provide chest-compression only CPR instructions over the phone. Children (pre-pubescent) should receive, at a minimum, chest compressions; however, rescue breaths should be provided if the bystander is willing and able. Bystanders start immediate chest compressions if they see an adult collapse in a suspected cardiac arrest. Good Morning Santa Clara University Daylight savings will be coming to an end this weekend, gaining that hour back. With that change, Campus Safety would like to remind our community to take a moment to review some tips from FEMA regarding smoke detectors and your emergency family plan: When setting your clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 5, test your smoke alarms, review your family’s emergency escape plans, and replace any emergency supplies that may expire soon. ... A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all. Take care of your smoke alarms according to the manufacturer instructions, and follow these tips from the U.S. Fire Administration: Smoke alarm powered by a nine-volt battery - Test the alarm monthly. Replace the batteries at least once every year. Replace the entire smoke alarm every 10 years. Smoke alarm powered by a 10-year lithium (or long-life) battery- Test the alarm monthly. Since you cannot (and should not) replace the lithium battery, replace the entire smoke alarm according to the manufacturer's instructions and dispose of it properly at a household hazardous waste site or by sending it back to the manufacturer. Smoke alarms hardwired into your home's electrical system - Test the alarm monthly. Replace the backup battery at least once every year. Replace the entire smoke alarm every 10 years. Review your family emergency escape plans to ensure they are up to date. Replace any emergency supplies that will expire within the next six months and use the old supplies before they expire. Some examples of items that can expire are: Water; Food; Prescription medications; First-aid supplies; and Batteries. For more information on emergency plans or supplies, visit www.ready.gov.
