The crown-of-thorns starfish is a sea star named for the spines that cover its body and arms. These spines are somewhat flexible in life and are used for locomotion and for defense from potential predators. This species is a well-known coral predator, and outbreaks of tens of thousands of individuals have been known to cause serious harm to coral reefs in some areas. These outbreaks may be a result of overfishing of the crown-of-thorns starfish’s primary predator, the giant t...riton or they may be a natural phenomenon. These starfish are known to be more successful at preying on large swaths of coral reefs when the corals are already stressed. During times of coral bleaching or stresses caused by human activities, outbreaks of the crown-of-thorn starfish may be particularly destructive. These starfish feed by inverting their entire stomach, through the mouth, and digesting the thin layer of soft tissue off of a coral’s skeleton, right in the open environment, and sucking down the available nutrients. - #seastar #seastars #asteroidea #locomotion #triton #padi #padidiver #paditv #extinction #underwaterbeauty #marinelife #marinebiology #marinecorps #openocean #wildocean #underwaterphotography #scubaaddict #scubadiving #scubadivers #scuba #scubalife #scubaphoto #scubaworld #scubalove #underwaterworld #underwaterlife #underwatermacro #uwmacro #uwpic #uwpics - : @whitcomberd Reposted from @marine_encyclopedia See more

The Cotton candy Lobster Lobsters get their usual greenish-blue shade when crustacyanin a protein they produce combines with astaxanthin, a bright red carotenoid found in their diet. If the lobsters do not eat their usual astaxanthin-rich food like crabs and shrimp, they result in a lack of pigment which could give them a pastel appearance. The lobster has a vibrant purple, blue and pinkish shell that stands out dramatically next to its brownish relatives. Their occurrence is... very rare and their bright colors make it harder for them to hide from predators. The rarest lobster is the albino lobster which appears 1 in 100 million lobsters. The 2 lb. lobster, known as Lucky, was caught by Canadian fisherman Robinson Russell off Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick last November. Marine biologists said that the food chain also plays a role in their rarity. Researchers said that they are very rare species and are available one in million. See more

Did we find Patrick? The pink sea star has five thick arms and a large central disc. It is one of the largest sea stars in the world. While typically having a diameter of 320 millimetres (13 in), monsters up to 90 centimetres (35 in) have been found. The largest animals may weigh 4.5 kilograms (9.9 lb). The upper, arboral, surface of this star is generally pink, sometimes with shadings of gray. The radius of the arms is 2.8 to 5.0 times the radius of the central disc. The ...central disc contains an obvious madreporite on its upper surface. This structure filters water used by the animal. The mouth of the animal is found on the underside of the central disc. There are short, 2 millimetres (0.079 in) spines on the upper surface of the star. While a row of spines generally runs along the top of each arm, they are otherwise scattered across the animal in no particular pattern singly or in clumps of two or three. Both the upper surface and lower surfaces contain tiny pincers, pedicellariae, which likely are used to get rid of encrusting organisms which would otherwise grow on the star. On the lower, or oral side of the star, deep grooves radiate from the mouth which contain four rows of tube feet. The star uses these to move around, and to capture its prey. The tube feet around the mouth are particularly long, at least equal to the radius of the central disc, to aid in digging prey from the sea bottom. - #seastar #seastars #spongebobpatrick #spongebobmemes #patrickseastar #padi #padidiver #paditv #spongebobsquarepants #underwaterbeauty #marinelife #marinebiology #marinecorps #openocean #wildocean #underwaterphotography #scubaaddict #scubadiving #scubadivers #scuba #scubalife #scubaphoto #scubaworld #scubalove #underwaterworld #underwaterlife #underwatermacro #uwmacro #uwpic #uwpics - : unknown Reposted from @marine_encyclopedia

The striped pyjama squid is one of the few known poisonous cephalopods that roam the seafloor of the Indo-Pacific Oceans, along with the flamboyant cuttlefish and the Southern blue-ringed octopus. Scientists believe that the striped pyjama squid's distinctive black stripes give away its venomous nature to potential predators, but small glands under the body are responsible for releasing the toxic slime that is dangerous to passersby. Despite its common name, the striped pyjam...a squid is actually a species of cuttlefish, a versatile animal that can often change its appearance, has an internal shell, eight arms and two feeding tentacles. The striped pyjama squid's small and rounded appearance like that of a dumpling has inspired other people to commonly refer to it as the striped dumpling squid. It lives in sand and mud habitats of shallow coastal waters from southern Great Barrier Reef to central South Australia. Similar to other small cephalopod species, the striped pyjama squid is a master of disguise and during daylight will bury itself in a background of sand and broken shells so that only the top of its head is visible. Its yellow eye is usually the only part of the cuttlefish that pokes above the sea floor. At night, the cuttlefish emerges to feed on small shrimp and fish. Two long fins flank the sides of the striped pyjama squid's body and the arms of its two feeding tentacles have small suckers, each with a toothed horny rim. The underside of its body is covered in small glands that secrete slime when the striped pyjama squid is under attack, quickly scaring off any predators from making a move. It can also drastically change color to a dark purple-brown, making it easier to camouflage itself against rocks and corals near the bottom of the ocean. - #stripedpyjamasquid #squid #squids #stripedpyjamas #goodnight #gosleep #poisonous #cephalopod #cephalopods #octopus #cuttlefish #nautilus #seafloor #indopacific #ocean #flamboyant #versatilestyle #southaustralian #greatbarrierreef #barrierreef #reefaddict #yelloweye #underwaterphotography #underwater #underwaterworld #underwaterlife #underwaterpics #underwaterpic #underwatershot #uwpics - : unknown Repo See more

Time to start posting beautiful stuff! This is elder Cyanea capillata, or Lions mane jellyfish, who has cast off its long tentacles. They do this at the end of their life cycle. Before spawning, they practically stop feeding and shrink considerably in size, using the accumulated nutrients to produce eggs. In this form they no longer look like a shaggy mane made of hundreds and thousands of fine tentacles, instead they resemble cosmic flowers. #aquatilis #education #marinebiology #underwater #blackwater #jellyfish #cyanea #scyphozoa #underwaterphoto #underwaterphotography #zeisslens #subalunderwaterhousing Reposted from @aquatilis_expedition

An Eden’s whale trap feeding in the Gulf of Thailand. This extraordinary behavior (where the whale treads water!) is thought to have developed because pollution has made the Gulf of Thailand a hypoxic environment. Sewage outflows from the land have caused all the oxygen in the water to be used up, except at the surface. This means the whale’s fish prey can only live in this surface layer. By treading water and keeping the corners of their mouth below the surface, a flow is created pulling the fish into the whale's mouth. In the panic, some of the fish also seem to jump out of the water and into the whale’s mouth! Video/Caption by @bertiegregory Reposted from @seven_seas_explorer

Due to the corona crisis, face masks are also popping up today, not only as litter on the street, but also in the sea. They end up there via the wind and waterways. The Marine Environment department of the FPS Public Health is therefore starting an awareness campaign to make people aware of the impact of this waste on watercourses and to encourage them not to lose their mouth mask. Remarkable: it can take up to 450 years for mouth masks to degrade in the environment. In a...ddition, mouth masks seem to float underwater like jellyfish, so that marine animals regard the masks as food. Their stomach is immediately filled with this, without any nutritional value. As a result, they show exhaustion symptoms. Animals can also get caught up in it. Ultimately, microparticles from mouth masks can even end up on our plates. . . . . . #diving #wreck #cave #scubadiving #scuba #underwater #underwaterphotography #ocean #sea #diver #underwaterworld #tauchen #marinelife #adventure #sealife #divinglife #redsea #ssi #divingtrip #underwaterlife #scubalife #oceanlife #icediving #divers #reef #blue #diveGUE #guehq #scientificdiver Reposted from @7thsense_expert See more
