Moira Mulhern, a Scripps senior and Environmental Analysis major, is rounding out her degree with the Humanities Institute this spring. I wanted to take advantage of all of the diverse academic resources/disciplines at Scripps before I graduate. As an environmentally-focused student, Moira feels especially passionate about learning and bringing attention to the philosophies of the native peoples of the land we are on. This semester, she has been looking internally to chall...enge the subconscious manifestations of her Western upbringing. We have talked a lot about trying to understand these texts and speakers on their own terms, for their own merit or outside of what they mean in an American context. It's a really important exercise to shed all of the Western baggage and preconceived notions and try to understand these ideas in a (hopefully) more authentic way. After Moira graduates in just a few weeks with the Class of 2021, she hopes to work in the intersection of food justice and food sustainability. Ideally, she wants to work at an urban garden. We’re cheering you on, Moira! #humanitiesfellowspotlight #Classof2021 #scrippscollege
Our penultimate event is coming up next Thursday, and the Humanities Institute can’t wait to welcome University of Hong Kong Professor Chad Hansen for a lecture on Chinese Daoism. Professor Hansen has lived in Hong Kong on and off since the 1960s, and his research primarily focuses on the Chinese theory of language and logic. Join us April 22 at 5 pm! https://scrippscollege.zoom.us/j/99416232331
We had so much fun with Anne Waters, Ph.D last night! After hearing from experts in non-Western philosophies from across the country and the globe this semester, it was great to also learn about Indigenous philosophy, a topic close to home in Southern California and the Southwest. If you enjoyed our conversation with Dr. Waters or want to learn more, consider courses from the new Scripps College minor in Native American/Indigenous Studies, the first of its kind at the Claremont Colleges! Thank you, Dr. Waters!
Happening tomorrow at 4 pm!!
Meet Kerry Wong, a Scripps sophomore majoring in Human Biology. Inspired by her Core III class, LA Rock ’n’ Roll with Professor Hao Huang, Kerry sought out the Humanities Institute to expand her perspective beyond the Western influence. I’ve had few opportunities to learn from non-European lenses, so it’s been eye-opening to learn from the HI speakers and reflect on our individual privilege while making space for other voices, especially those who have been diminished and marginalized. With the semester coming to a close, Kerry is looking forward to Olúfmi Táíwò’s lecture on May 4th. I am particularly excited about Olúfmi Táíwò's event because of his research on the philosophy of law and constitutionalism in Africa. P.S. Isn’t Kerry’s outdoor set-up amazing?! #humanitiesinstitute #humanitiesfellowspotlight #ScrippsCollege
Looking for plans next Thursday? We’re hosting Dr. Anne Waters on April 8 at 4 pm for her lecture Where We Belong: Land Life Spirit. Join us on Zoom for a conversation with an expert on Indigenous philosophy: https://scrippscollege.zoom.us/j/97469942265
