Gardeners Near & Far! Looking to super charge your garden? Soil is a living ecosystem of microbial life. There are lots of beneficial bacteria and fungi that are essential to its health. They play a central role in the nutrient cycle The presence of biochar helps these microbes flourish. This is down to its uniquely complex and porous structure, which provides their ideal habitat. Scott Valley Biochar Sale - February 13th from 10:00-12:00pm at the SRWC office.

"Hello my name is Lilia Neely, I was a YESS crew member the summer of 2019. It gave me the opportunity to work with environmental professionals and other high school students with different personalities and strengths than my own. While being a junior in high school at the time, I knew that I wanted to go into a career that involved the outdoors. When I was told about this summer program opportunity, I became excited, went home and filled out the application bringing it back... to my teacher that next day. I was extremely happy when I found out that I had gotten the job. I knew it was going to help me grow as a leader, boost my self confidence level, give me a great opportunity to work outdoors with many different professionals, allow me to learn about career opportunities, work on my team working abilities, and to overall have a pretty amazing summer. At the time I would have never imagined it would have had such an impact on my life. I can remember the first time my crew had the chance to work with the Salmon River Restoration Council (SRRC) on the river. We were working on important river restoration area and I had the AhhHaa moment of this is what I wanted to do as a career. I went home and started researching good colleges that had a Fisheries Biology, Environmental Science & Management, and Wildlife programs. I learned about Humboldt State University (HSU) and the outstanding programs they provide. I became more determined than ever to get the best possible grades I could and get as many scholarships as I possibly could so that I would go to HSU that next fall to achieve a Bachelor's Degree in Fisheries Biology; fresh water. My goal is to become a Fish and Game Warden or to come back to this spectacular Scott Valley I have been so lucky to call home all my life, and work to restore the watersheds in our amazing and historical river systems. If it was not for the YESS program, I wouldn't have been so determined to higher my educational goals, seeing it has been a struggle for me since day one. I would recommend this program to any high school student, especially if they love being outside, working hard, making incredible memories, and if they aren’t sure what they want to do as a future career because this opportunity will provide them with amazing resources to learn from." The Youth Environmental Summer Studies (YESS) was established in 2017 in a partnership between the Scott River Watershed Council, the Klamath National Forest, the Quartz Valley Indian Reservation, the Salmon River Restoration Council and the City of Etna Police Activities League. Over 25 Siskiyou County youth, ages 16-18, have gone through this program. We are so proud of Lilia and are looking forward to the 2021 season!

Another great day today learning about this new technology. There is definitely a lot to consider on the feasibility, much around the economics, but today we mo...ved a step closer to being able to answer some of the questions. The best thing about today was to see people, local and from a far, working together, talking, thinking of solutions to problem that faces much of the West. Today was inspiring and Scott Valley should be proud for once again, being open to new ideas, innovation and willing to come together to make a difference. See more
