Vaginal Odor Prevention As a gynecologist, my patients have enlightened me that nothing gets in the way of intimacy more than a smelly vagina. The worse thing to use is a flowery smelling or betadine douche (vaginal rinse). The interplay between bacteria and our bodily functions is so important. In the mouth when out of balance not only leads to bad breath but also gum disease that if longstanding can put a person at risk for heart attacks and pregnant women to deliver prema...turely. In the intestines, we're learning more than ever how a healthy "Biome" is not only critical for proper bowel function but also affects the metabolism of our entire bodies. Likewise, the vagina strives to be in balance thanks to the dominance of a bacteria called lactobacillus which as its name implies produces lactic acid keeping the pH of the vagina low (slightly acidic). When this balance is disturbed for reasons known like oral antibiotics, and honestly many times unknown, then yeast (Candida) or a minority group of bacteria takeover. These overgrowths can respectively cause a "Yeast Infection" and Bacterial Vaginosis (BV for short). For most women, these "overgrowths" can be simply treated with a vaginal antibiotic that will temporarily decrease the population of the offending organisms, and balance is typically restored. However, for unknown reasons some women experience recurrent overgrowth episodes. With BV this results not only in a very unpleasant vaginal odor (like dead fish) but also puts these women at increased risk for STDs including uterine and tubal infections, post-operative infections, bladder infections, and even premature delivery of babies. So one way to keep the vaginal ecosystem healthy is to keep the pH low. If you suffer from recurrent BV using a vaginal acidifying agent has been shown in clinical studies to help. Using a vinegar-based douche may temporarily resolve the odor, but doesn't persist at keeping the pH low. One long time remedy is to place a boric acid capsule in your vagina three times a week. Another is to use RepHresh gel twice a week (Don't worry about remembering this I keep them listed in my practice's website library in the vagina section). So now you know a little more about keeping your vagina healthy.

A paradigm shift, OBGyns and patients should ask themselves, Why keep an organ with no ongoing physiological role when it can be safely removed at the time of planned surgery and leaving it in place puts a woman at risk for a potentially preventable cancer? http://scottkramermd.com/opportunity-to-reduce-ovarian-can/

Birth Control Without a Prescription. Really! Women of any age may now walk into a pharmacy in California and obtain birth control without visiting a doctor. This improves the access to contraception and hopefully reduces unplanned pregnancies.
