Q&A with LEGENDARY HOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR - JOE JOHNSTON Joe Johnston began his film industry career at the age of 25 when he was hired by George Lucas as a designer and visual effects art director on STAR WARS, A New Hope. Johnston stayed with Lucasfilm for ten years, art directing, designing, and storyboarding visual effects sequences for the EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, RETURN OF THE JEDI, and the first two Indiana Jones films, RAIDERS of the LOST ARK for which he received an Academy... Award, and TEMPLE of DOOM. Johnston’s designs include the Millenium Falcon, X-wing, Y-wing, Death Star, Tie Fighter, Imperial Snow Walker, Speeder Bikes, Yoda, Boba Fett and many others. In 1984 George Lucas offered to pay Johnston’s tuition and keep him on half salary if he would attend USC film school for two semesters. While at USC Johnston created a nine-minute black and white, non-sync sound film that helped convince Disney’s Jeffrey Katzenberg to hire him to direct his debut film HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS. The film had a production budget of 18 million dollars and grossed over 222 million dollars worldwide. Johnston went on to direct THE ROCKETEER, JUMANJI, OCTOBER SKY, JURASSIC PARK 3, HIDALGO, THE WOLFMAN, and CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE FIRST AVENGER.
