Each month, we are taking a closer look at students or staff members of our ABT Gillespie School for #TutuTuesday. This month get to know 13-year-old Edelawit Aucoin. Edelawit and her mother packed their bags and moved from New Orleans to Southern California to advance Edelawit's ballet training. We asked her some questions for #TutuTuesday! ... Why did you choose to train at the ABT Gillespie School? Two students at one of my previous studios in New Orleans have gone on to study at the ABT Gillespie School, and I heard about the program there. Last year I left New Orleans to study at the UNCSA Preparatory Program, which was an amazing experience, but I always had ABT training as a dream. During the pandemic, my mother and I were suddenly able to move to California, so I applied. A year and a half after first hearing about the program, I'm going after one of my biggest goals, training with ABT. Why do you love ballet/dance? This is really cliche, but I danced Clara in The Nutcracker at my first studio. Ever since then, I knew that the feeling of being on stage is unbeatable, and I never wanted to stop dancing. The feeling of the lights beating down on you, the world stopping just for you to dance, it's perfect. What are your future goals with dancing? Like most dancers at this stage in training, I want to be a professional in a company. ABT and Royal Ballet are both my dreams. One of my biggest goals is to leave a mark on at least one young Black dancer out there who doesn't feel confident in this white-dominated world of ballet. From personal experience, I know that seeing other Black dancers makes you feel seen and proud to take on ballet. We are so excited to have you and watch you grow, Edelawit! #ABT #BalletTraining #ABTGillespieSchool #TutuTuesday
