A Year of Dance Resilience: @synergymoves Our studio quickly pivoted (pun intended) back in March of last year from a full roster of in person classes to offering our members daily live streaming online classes and on demand videos. Navigating all of the technical and logistical needs of making this enormous shift so abruptly was a huge challenge. We relied on the encouragement of fellow studio owners and directors such as Ruth Fisher of Dancenter and Cat Willis of TWDCC, as... well as the all important support and strength of our members and community, to keep pushing forward. We are so grateful to all the dancers and movers who continue to show up for our virtual classes and have really kept us afloat throughout the past year. We are excited to again be offering some in-studio classes and we are looking forward to seeing the rest of 2021 unfold. Synergy Dance Fitness Tai Chi is located in Aptos and offers daily small group and/or virtual dance and fitness classes for adults, including Choreography and performance opportunities, Synergy JAM aerobic dance, Functional Strength Training, Gentle Yoga, Cardio Dance, Classical Ballet, Yoga Sculpt, Pilates HIIT, Core Sculpt & Stretch, and more to the Aptos community and beyond. A Year of Dance Resilience: @scsenderos Senderos is a volunteer-based nonprofit creating pathways to success for the Latinx community through performing arts and educational opportunities. Centeotl Danza y Baile is our folkloric dance group focused on teaching students a repertoire of Mexican regional dances and performing for the community. We aim to expand the knowledge and skills of Centeotl participants, while also showcasing the rich Mexican cultural traditions for the ...greater community. We’ve continued to offer online dance & have featured guest teachers from different regions of Mexico. This was a difficult transition for our youth and families. Many were faced with job loss, housing and food insecurity, serious health concerns, lack of technology and connectivity, adjusting to distance learning. Senderos is a community have been many challenges for the youth families we serve and we have expanded our mission to serve their economic and emotional needs as well. Since we could not present our annual Guelaguetza festival in May 2020, we presented a full-length film showing highlights of our 2018 and 2019 events. We also partnered with the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH) featuring stories about Guelaguetza in Santa Cruz, including Somos Guelaguetza (We are Guelaguetza) by filmmaker Megan Martinez Goltz, and for a virtual and in-person safe Día de los Muertos festival in October/November with more dance & music videos, and an educational curriculum about the Day of the Dead traditions. For the upcoming virtual Guelaguetza on May 16, 2021 we will be producing new video of dancers in Oaxaca and also Centeotl here in Santa Cruz performing traditional dances from the eight regions of Oaxaca. Since we partner with Santa Cruz City Schools to use school sites for our classes and activities, and also out of great concern for our vulnerable families, we have been following strict protocol and not meeting in person. We will shortly resume in-person classes in small cohorts following all school district guidelines. We can’t wait to be together again in joyful celebration; dancing and performing!

A Year of Dance Resilience : @steelandgracepole When COVID hit Steel and Grace made the quick pivot to virtual classes (after we got over the shock and fear then caught our breath!) With a focus on community connection during a time of isolation we began every class with space for check in and student interactions. We took all the knowledge we have about how to move emotions and stress as well as how to keep conditioned for pole art then curated non pole classes... for a yea...r! The beauty of this experience is that dancers from ALL over started dialing in for our classes! Canada, Arizona, Washington, Tennessee, Montana, Colorado... so cool! The core of Steel and Grace's value of community actually enhanced during a time when most people were feeling isolated and separate from others. Although it was a challenging year in many ways, we as a studio and as a community of dancers found ways to thrive. Now that we are reopened we are welcoming many new students along with our long time members. We are all a bit out of shape but quickly getting back into pole ready shape! We continue to welcome our distance community members with virtual offerings and are SO DELIGHTED to be back in the studio too!
