"The grassroots effort gathered 98,171 signatures, well above the roughly 62,000 needed. The city will now spend from two weeks to two months checking the validity of the submitted signatures. Given the large number of signatures, more than fifty percent over the requirement, the measure appears very likely to appear on the Tuesday November 8 ballot." United to House L.A.

New research from the California Housing Partnership lays out data on homes at risk of becoming unaffordable to the lowest incomes renters, due to rent increases, market conversion, and expiring public subsidies. Elected officials should implement policies that prevent these homes from becoming unaffordable and residents from losing their homes as a result.

More groundbreaking news! Our members Weingart Center just started construction on their first permanent supportive housing development. The West LA site is now a city-owned parking lot and soon will be 51 affordable homes with on-site supportive services for unhoused folks.

California needs an eviction moratorium extension and rent relief that more efficiently reaches tenants. The stock market may be fine, we may be technically reopened, but people in low-wage jobs which are disproportionately people of color are not back yet.

The City of Sacramento recently ended exclusionary zoning, allowing up to four homes on plots currently limited to single-family. This will lead to much greater housing production in the city, including (though not exclusively) affordable housing production, and serves as a model for the rest of California.

Construction has stalled on this community center in South LA since 2016. Now the property will be transformed into 41 new homes affordable to low-income residents. Construction is expected to finish by the end of this year.

Project Roomkey funding was never enough, so it should come as no surprise that COVID is now surging among our unhoused neighbors in LA. More federal, state, and local funding is sorely needed to safely house our most vulnerable. "Deciding between staying outside in the winter or coming inside to a group shelter at the height of the pandemic is a grim choice that no one should have to make."

Exciting to see a modular construction approach to a proposed affordable housing development in the Pico-Union neighborhood of LA. If approved, this project would add 75 new affordable homes to the community.

"As the pandemic enters a new year, advocates warn the unhoused population’s challenges aren’t over yet. California has seen an unprecedented rise in infections this month, while COVID fatigue is testing the limits of everyone’s compassion."

LGBT elders are more likely than their non-LGBT peers to experience poverty and social isolation due to decades of housing and job discrimination, as well as social and family rejection. Shelterforce has a great piece on how SAGE and other housing providers address this through culturally competent LGBT inclusive and affirming affordable housing.

Concerns for potential COVID spread among staff and volunteers are valid, but the annual homeless PIT counts are a vital tool for advocates and the public to know how significantly homelessness is increasing in our communities. Agencies charged with conducting the counts should modify their approach rather than cancel altogether.

A new UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools report reveals that there are at least 269,000 homeless California K-12 students -- by all accounts an underestimate. When kids grow up experiencing homelessness and housing instability, they aren't able to perform at their best in school and they are disproportionately likely to develop physical and mental illness from they weight of their experience. We must do more to end homelessness by ensuring an affordable home for all vulnerable households.
