News Release: All San Bernardino County School Districts to Begin New School Year with Distance Learning 7-17-2020 SAN BERNARDINO Following the release of new... state guidance for schools announced today by Gov. Gavin Newsom, all San Bernardino County school districts and charter schools will begin the 2020-21 school year with distance learning. Given the current increases in confirmed COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations statewide, Gov. Newsom said that safety is foundational for how schools will reopen as we deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the new state guidance, schools cannot reopen their campuses until the county in which they are located has been off the state’s COVID-19 monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. San Bernardino County is currently one of 32 California counties currently on the list. The guidance applies to public, charter and private schools. I appreciate that both our governor and state superintendent recognize that reopening school campuses in counties experiencing a surge in the virus, compromises the health and safety of our students, staff and families, said County Superintendent Ted Alejandre. Our hope is that our students will be able to return to their school sites for in-class instruction in the near future, but at this time, we need to make decisions that provide for the health and safety of our communities. The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS) has been working collaboratively with the County Department of Public Health to assist county school districts in the development and review of school reopening plans. While some county school districts had made the decision to begin the school year with distance learning and hybrid models of instructional delivery, the new guidance now mandates that all of the county’s 33 school districts provide distance learning to more than 406,000 county students when school begins in the fall. Since school campuses closed in March due to the coronavirus, local education agencies across the state have been working to optimize distance learning opportunities and take steps necessary to ensure students have access to devices and the Internet. County Schools established a Distance Learning portal on its website that houses on-line learning resources for educators and families and also has partnered with Empire KVCR to offer at-home learning television programming on local PBS stations. Each school district will provide details to their local school communities on their distance learning plans for the 2020-21 school year. A list of school district websites as well as COVID-19 updates can be found on the SBCSS website at www.sbcss.net.
