Snowpack Summary February 8, 2020 Posted by Allen Giernet @ 8:17 am This summary applies to backcountry areas only. The Bottom L...ine - The avalanche concern remains low at this time while we wait for more snow through an extended dry spell. Continued warming into today will bring a chance of Loose Wet avalanche activity on solar effected slopes where there is still snow. Most of our Southern aspects have been melted out. With the approaching cut off low expected Sunday things could change. The amount of snow is highly variable due to the nature of the storm. But with current forecast predicting 6/ 15cm to 9/ 22.5cm accumulation, along with strong Northeasterly winds through Monday our Concern will be the development of wind slab avalanches. These will develop on Southwestern aspects but are mainly going to be building on bare ground and recent storm snow. Topographical influences will bring the possibility of these developing in other aspects especially gullies and below ridgelines where snow does still exist. Be on the lookout for signs of transported snow, wind scouring, blowing snow, pillowing and firm snow surfaces where drifted snow has accumulated. The other concern will be storm snow due to the current wind scoured and melt freeze crust surface of the majority of our snowpack. This will produce poor bonding with the cold nature of the storm coming in. Monday morning and into Tuesday we can anticipate the development of loose snow and storm slab avalanches on the Northern aspects and the sheltered locations that still have snow. This will all depend upon the track of the storm and how much moisture it picks up on it’s way. Fast firm conditions with slide for life scenarios remain the biggest concern into Sunday. Even into next week these conditions will be possible with a dust on crust to a few inches of snow on a firm icy base. Be prepared with proper equipment (ice axe and crampons) and know how to use them. A slip and fall can lead to a slide for life situation, these are the most common incidents we have in our local mountains. Choose your approaches accordingly. A much colder airmass will settle into SoCal Monday through Wednesday with temperatures 10-15 below normal. The coldest air will be observed Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with temperatures down into the single digits in the higher mountains and in the teens in the High Desert.

If you’re looking to stretch your legs but snow is not your thing, do not worry! We have many trails that offer great vistas and don’t require snowshoes. The Pi...nnacles Trail is located just north of Lake Arrowhead off highway 173. The 1.8 mile trail leads to spectacular views of the Mojave Desert. What are you favorite winter hikes in the Forest? For more information on the Pinnacles Trail, visit our website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recar//recreation/hiking/recarea/

As the snow begins to melt, the broken sleds begin to appear. Every winter some areas that receive snowfall are heavily impacted. The most common trash we find ...is broken sleds, but we also find disposable kitchenware and even diapers. We can all work together to keep these areas clean by using the provided dumpsters and packing-out what you pack-in. Thank you for your help! #EnjoyYourWorld #LeaveNoTrace See more

Snowpack Summary update January 17, 2020 Posted by Allen Giernet @ 8:32 am This summary applies to backcountry areas only. ... The Bottom Line The long cool dry spell was broken by a brief storm delivering at most a couple of inches near the 8,000’/ 2,438m elevation. Accompanying this system was strong Southwest winds. With the new available snow we can expect to see Windslabs developing on Northerly aspects. Prior to this storm we have had quite variable surface conditions in most areas wind crusts and melt freeze crusts were predominant. Expect poor bonding of the wind transported snow to the old snow surface. There will be variability throughout the mountains, be aware of vastly different conditions as you travel in relations to elevation, aspect and slope angle. The cold temperatures will have maintained fast firm conditions in some locations especially at the lower elevations where melt freeze conditions have taken place. Watch for these conditions on sun exposed slopes and Southern aspects. Be aware and bring proper equipment (ice axe and crampons) to prevent a slip and fall situation that could lead to a slide for life scenario. Exercise caution on slopes >30. Be well aware of your surroundings and changing conditions throughout the day and your travel area. Expect variable conditions, be prepared with the proper equipment and plan accordingly. General Summary 1-4-2020 @6:36am Loose Wet Avalanche Danger will increase on Southerly aspects E,SE,S,SW & W as the day warms. Be aware of rapidly changing co...nditions from firm snow to soft unsupportable snow as the day warms up. Watch for Roller balls, pinwheels and your boots sinking into boot tops these are signs of loose snow instability. Anticipate fast firm conditions in the morning and be prepared with ice axe and crampons or change travel plans. Prevent getting yourself into a situation where retreat is not possible. A slip and fall in these conditions can lead to a slide for life scenario with dire consequences. These situations are the biggest problem we have in our southern California mountains and are the cause for most of our winter rescue situations. Cooler temperatures are expected next week and will reduce the possibility of Loose Wet snow instability. For the full summary visit the avalanche center website http://www.socalsnow.org/ or follow the link in the profile. Pictured is baldy bowl with crown lines very difficult to discern in the chutes. Report will be up on the website this evening.
