The future of post-COVID-19 Judo with oxygen masks and gloves. Just joking. Actually, this is the sport of Kudo Daido Juku or Kudo for short, derived from full contact Karate, combining striking, kicking, throwing and grappling.

From Migoto Judo Club in Chula Vista, CA Hello Migoto Judo Families, I hope you are all doing well during these holidays. It has been a tough year for many of us and we hope that you are finding ways to thrive.... We are hopeful for a better 2021 and to being able to interact and see you all again soon. Unfortunately, we have some sad news to share. One of our Migoto Judo Families is a victim of Covid19. Carlo Navida passed away over the weekend. It was a sudden turn of events. Most of you know his son Elias who is currently practicing Judo with us at Migoto Judo and some of you also know his 2 older sons Nathan and Christian who also practiced Judo with us in the past. Carlo leaves behind his wife Nayda and a big void in his family. We are all devastated by these events and we know that many of you want to help. There is a GoFundMe campaign setup to help the family: https://gofund.me/fd4bac90 Please stay safe and do what you can to avoid this terrible disease. Hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel but in the meantime, we must continue to make decisions in the best interest of health and happiness for ourselves and our loved ones. Please let me know if you have any questions or need to reach out to talk. Best regards, Sensei Roland 858-776-2673

UKEMI THE ART OF FALLING PART 5 BY HAYWARD NISHIOKA A famous physicist once said, One of the great challenges of life is knowing enough to think you’re right, but not enough to know you are wrong. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, most people would say, that is what makes judo so dynamic and effective; the beautiful throws that come out of nowhere and slam opponents to the ground as if by magic. However, they would only be partially right, but not enough... to be totally right. The magic came not so much from the ability to throw a person, but by the practice partner in the ability to sustain the multiple throws safely, without whose endless cooperative falls, the thrower would not be able to develop and execute any throw with precision and skill. Four of the most under-rated techniques of judo is the zenpo kaiten ukemi (rolling fall), ushiro ukemi (rear fall), yoko ukemi, (side fall,) and mae ukemi, (front fall). Yes, the falling techniques while they happen to seemingly be a by-product of a throw they are actually more important than the throw. For without the knowledge of how to fall without being injured, the person throwing would not be able to hone his skill’s to the point of control that todays judoka can, in less than a blink of an eye, enter and throw an opponent. To be sure the person being thrown, without knowing how to fall correctly would be seriously injured. The facts to this reality are evident from the statistics given by the World Health Organization which states that as per unintended death and injuries due to falling it is second only to deaths and injuries from automobile accidents, and that’s for our whole planet. Doing Big Judo By Hayward Nishioka Sometimes it’s the teacher’s favorite throw and you want to be like him or her. Some will learn different throws and not be interested in any until they see one done on YouTube, like an Uchimata by Jushiro Maruyama. Both bodies leave the mat and go airborne; it’s like magic. Two bodies flying through space; one refusing to go while the other lifts one leg high into the air as the tip of his supporting foot on tiptoe says otherwise. It all t...akes place in a second but there is a beauty about the move that lasts an eternity. There’s a brief hush, then the crowd goes wild. Doug Baba Sensei’s Yondan Black Belt Promotion Ceremony In our third Black Belt Promotion ZOOM Ceremony this Sunday, 6 September, Chitoshi Doug Baba was promoted to his well-deserved Yondan, 4th degree Black Belt. Starting Judo as a child, he remains a very longtime and outstanding member of our Dojo taking the time after work to teach our members his unique Judo. Let him introduce you to his Ko Uchi Gari. He coaches at most Judo tournaments and coaches our Juniors and Seni...ors, breaking up that tension and mat anxiety in his light-hearted ways by joking and motivating our competitors. After an early morning start at work, he comes to our Dojo to assist with our classes. If there is anything that he values and shares with others, it is the value of giving back to Judo. He is truly a unique individual who embodies the meaning of "Jita Kyoei," or "mutual welfare and benefit." His commitment to our Dojo is invaluable to say the least given the number of endless hours and support that he has given to our membership over the years. Although his time has long passed as a competitor, he gains great satisfaction in seeing his students improve and grow by sharing his knowledge, experience, and wisdom with them. Although you may have not seen him during this shutdown and the wisp of rumors of retirement, he will remain as a vital part of Sawtelle Judo Dojo This ceremony was held at Dan the Man’s Superkids Gymnasium in WLA. When you see him in person, please congratulate Baba Sensei for his promotion thank him for his valuable contribution to our Dojo and our Judo community.
