Is this what it looks like in Bear Heaven? Hopefully there are trees to climb and no cars.... The BEAR League and Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care want to remind everyone to be constantly aware that bears are crossing the roadways.... day and night. Watch for them, please. Within just the past 12 hours Four Bears were hit and killed on Tahoe's roads. Three were yearlings. ... This is unacceptable. See more

Really .. Seriously? Kings Beach at Fox and Minnow. Hey Everyone! Come to Tahoe and enjoy the Wonder and Beauty of Nature. At the end of your fun day just leave your trash for someone else to clean up. Why worry about it? The bears will cross the roads to get it and many will die... who cares? ... The locals will have to live with it... who cares? The wind will blow it into the Tahoe National Forest and into the Lake... who cares? You had fun and perhaps spent a few dollars here and that's all that matters. See you next time... Hurry back! But keep in mind, it's getting uglier and uglier because no one cares. See more

Bears love gardens with water features. But sometimes when they get up to leave, they take all the water with them. This guy enjoyed a full 15 minutes in the little pond before he decided he was hungry again. BTW: Bears are Always hungry.

Meet Rudy... a typical 15 month-old Tahoe black bear who was just dispersed from his Mom, because that's what all Mother Bears do when their yearlings are this age. It's that time of year again and the BEAR League's phones are ringing continuously with calls from concerned residents and visitors, "There is a young bear who looks kinda scraggly and a bit too small to be on his own, can you come and get him and help him?" All across North American and everywhere in Bear Country... this is happening right now. Black Bear yearlings are sent out into the big world by their Mothers. They are not too terribly smart yet, they miss their Moms, they don't have credit cards or cell phones, they hope to find someone who will help them out with some easy food, they have little fear of people, they are losing their baby fur and are kinda skinny and they have never been alone before. Now is when we humans can really jump in and help them out by letting them know that we are NOT their new friends, we are NOT going to feed them, we are NOT going to allow them to take up residence under our porch, we are NOT going to talk sweetly to them.... INSTEAD we are going to help make big strong grown-up bears out of them by letting them know the rules: They need to forage for their own food (plenty of natural food for them right now) and they need to stay away from people because we are mean and scary and we yell at them. It takes a village to finish raising a bear cub, and the Mama Bears are counting on us to do our part. Please don't hesitate to call the BEAR League with questions or concerns ... we are here to help you---and the bears, too. 530-525-7297 See more

This Yellow Bellied Marmot was rescued by our good friends at Placer Co Animal Control when he was seen out in the middle of the road in Truckee circling and obviously confused. As soon as he arrived here at BEAR League headquarters we discovered he was severely emaciated and blind. He’s eating good now and we’ll do everything we can to get him well and back ‘home’. He needs your prayers and encouraging thoughts because it will help. Thanks, everyone.

Keep an eye on the water heater. The BEAR League is helping this Mama Bear and her three-month-old cub get ready to go out into the Big World together. Unbeknownst to the homeowner, Mama Bear entered under the house last November thru an unsecured crawl space opening and quietly settled in to prepare for the birth of her cub in late January. Unfortunately, she bumped a gas line several weeks ago and almost caused an explosion. The gas co turned off the gas and the bears were... left in peace so the cub could grow a bit bigger and safely learn how to run and climb. The homeowner and neighbors are all very protective of this little family and they have watched in wonder as Mama has taught her cub the skills he will need in order to leave the natal den. They will be ready to head out any day now. And then the homeowner will electrify his foundation so as to avoid any possible gas explosions in the future. The take-away message is: Secure your crawl spaces Before the bears go in to hibernate and/or give birth. Here at Tahoe several bears have their cubs under homes and cabins each winter. It’s much better for all involved if they den in the forest. Call the BEAR League if we can help. We are here for the Bears, and the People who live in Bear Country See more

The news media from all around the world has recently jumped on the story about the California bears with encephalitis issues. This young bear was the first one rescued by the BEAR League, a few years back. She had walked into a school and entered a classroom where she sat down with all the children like a friendly puppy dog. We don't know what causes this phenomenon but the CA DFW is studying cases and hopes to find the answers soon. ... If you live at Lake Tahoe and have a young bear who approaches you and shows no fear please call us immediately. The only way to diagnose encephalitis is to kill the bear and examine the brain. The BEAR League does Not kill bears, but the DFW will.... if a young bear presents with symptoms of encephalitis. Most young bears, after dispersing from their mothers (happening now and for the next three months) are also very friendly. There are many differences in behavior between a neurologically compromised bear and a dispersing bear.... but also some problematic similarities. We do not want our healthy dispersing yearlings to be confused with the bears who are ill. Call us if you have questions or concerns. 530-525-7297

"Now that I'm up, it's gotta be time for a nap." And after his brief nap he will be cruising around the Tahoe neighborhood sniffing for bird seed and unsecured trash... we know this only too well here at the BEAR League. So, now is the time for all the humans to 'wake up' as well and keep the bears safe by not feeding them... either on purpose or accidentally. Thanks, everyone! ...
