Hi friends! It has been a minute and I am back to announce that exciting things are coming to Sasha Millice Nutrition Therapy! Over the past two years I have been a bit off the social media map as I was pouring all of my energy into acting as director of a residential eating in the South Bay. Transitioning out of this role is super bittersweet, but it does mean I have more time for this account Cant wait to reconnect with you all! And to learn more about working with me - click the link in my bio
A heartbreaking look at the intersection between eating disorders and sports and the danger of the thinner is better narrative. https://www.nytimes.com//opini/nike-running-mary-cain.html
To me positive body image doesn’t mean loving your body, it means being able to live your life without focusing too much on your body. When a part of your body is uncomfortable, your are going to think about it. This is as true for your feet as it is for your thighs and stomach. The difference is that when our attention is drawn to the parts of the body that we are struggling to accept, it can easily trigger negative body image thoughts. Wearing clothes that are comfortable and actually fit your current body can make a huge difference in the prevalence of negative thoughts. My to do list this week includes taking a bag of clothes that no longer fit to goodwill. What can you do this week to honor your here-and-now body?
As a dietitian WW new program Kubro, which is selling weight loss to growing children as young as 8 years old, is horrifying. It doesn’t matter if you market it with pretty images and call it fun, teaching a child to count, track, and moralize food is a recipe for an adult with an unhealthy relationship with food. WW doesn’t need anymore lifelong customers ... http://chng.it/s5gzQNQwqP
I promise that dieting repackaged is still dieting. Dieting geared towards children is not more reputable than dieting geared towards adults. You can not prote...ct your children from weight stigma by introducing them to dieting. You can not invite them into health via weight management techniques (ie dieting). Apps that teach healthy lifestyles to kids and families are still reinforcing a culturallly sanctioned dieting mind that can lead to a lifetime of body hatred and potentially disordered eating. Your kids came into the world with expressive appetites and bodies destined to feel, dine, experience pleasure, and experiment with food. Some of our kids will be thin and some of our kids will be fat. They all came here whole and their bodies deserve our respect and trust. Protect them from the dieting industry. They want to capitalize on your fears and sense of responsibility to introduce your children to responsible weight control. Don’t do it. #bodytrust #bodytrustisyourbirthright #benourishedpdx

In my life up until that point, all I’d ever known of nutrition and fitness was what I’d picked up from the diet culture we live in: that being healthy means depriving yourself of the foods you want, taking a no-pain-no-gain approach to physical activity, and keeping a close watch on the scale. I equated these dieting behaviors with taking my health seriously.
Great article about how anti-"obesity" rhetoric contributes to stigmatization and harm! https://blogs.scientificamerican.com//fat-is-not-the-pro/
Your friends. Your family. Your social media feed. Everyone has an opinion about what pursuing health entails. But here’s the thing, you don’t have to listen. You don’t even have to prioritize health if you don’t want to or don’t have the resources to! If something doesn’t work for you, you are allowed to do things differently (even if everyone you know is raving about it)! Listen to your body.... Listen to your values. Listen to your intuition. Your healthy might not look like anyone else, and that’s not a bad thing! If you are ready to find your own definition of healthy, but need some support along the way, I offer virtual and in person nutrition counseling in Culver City, CA!
