Such a beautiful book highlighting some of the amazing and varied nonprofits here in Santa Barbara. A huge thank you to Gwyn Lurie at the Montecito Journal for putting this together! We feel incredibly honored to be part of this impressive project! So much gratitude from all of us here at Sarah House for sharing the work we do and for sharing the stories of other organizations doing so much good in Santa Barbara.

48 hrs ago my friend said I love you too... for the last time. Our friendship was short and sweet. He opened his heart to me, to us in a giving and natural way. Rest well my dear homie Rest In Peace. May you always know that I will never forget you. I love you Richard.

MEET PALOMA It is impossible to say Sarah House without saying Debbie McQuade. For those of you that have known SH since the early days, you know that the culture of SH began with Debbie. I have been here for 17 years, and I am happy and proud to say who we were then and who we are now remains the same. Team after team, year after year we have managed not to lose our roots and our tradition of Extraordinary Kindness. As for me; there are so many people, so many moments th...at have left a print both in my heart and in my memories. So many things I have learned by witnessing life and it’s counter balance; death. I have learned that each person has a real story and something to teach if one is willing to learn. I have learned that a table for eight can be big enough to hold 30 people it is all a matter of imagination, some extra plates, and a welcoming heart. I have learned that no one really dies specially when they are so loved, and when one continues to tell their story be it through tears, or with a smile. I could go on and on about all the things that changed in me by working in this wonderful home. For now I can only say that myself and the SH Staff know the great honor and responsibility it is to serve and represent Sarah House. We do it with love and we do it together. WE are Sarah House. PALOMA is SARAH HOUSE

MEET ALPHA: My story is very much like a story of any person moving into Sarah House. I was rescued 2 years ago, Paloma brought me here to SH; she told me I would be safe and that I was home. I slowly began to trust all 14 of the staff members, I felt their love and warmth and realized that they did love me. They made sure I had water, food, and snacks, they took me in and I became a part of the team. I now make rounds and visit all those that come to live and eventually die here in my home; which becomes their home too. I have licked many hands, kissed many noses, I have allowed many family members to hold me as they cry for their loss. I have also walked many people out along with the SH staff and their families. Sarah House is where I do my work. Paloma was right I am HOME. ALPHA is SARAH HOUSE

MEET KATE It is such a privilege to work for Sarah House, to be given the gift of sharing in the last moments of someone’s life, and knowing that the work we do here brings comfort to them in that time is a wonderful and humbling experience. I feel truly honored to be here each day, with our beautiful residents, amazing staff, and kind volunteers. KATE is Sarah House.

MEET SHALIMAR: Sarah House is more than just my work place, it’s home. Sarah House has been in my life since I was a 5 yr old little girl, my mom and my aunt have been working here for years. I have seen many employees, residents, family members, and nurses go through these doors. It’s an amazing experience to go from being a guest to being an employee. In the short time working here, I have learned that in the end family is everything. Family is more than just being related ...to someone, it’s a person that you can rely on in the toughest of times and in the happiest of times. Some residents come in with no family members to visit them, so we, as a team become their family and home. They rely on us to show them love, laughter, and patience. Sarah House is my home and I want to show residents how it can also become their home by simply being there for them. SHALIMAR is SARAH HOUSE

MEET ROSALINDA: My name is Rosalinda, my great desire was to enter Sarah house and I have been working there for 4 years and 7 months. I feel blessed to be in Sarah house because I have met so many people who come to Sarah House and each one leaves me a lesson. I am in love with my work, even though I leave with a broken soul when we have a death, because it hurts. But I love sarah house I love what I do. Rosalinda is Sarah House

MEET ASTRID, Hello, I’m Astrid . I have been working for Sarah House for a bit over a month. I joined the Sarah House team because Hospice Care is something I am passionate about. I love connecting with people and if the opportunity presents itself I like to bring joy to their life before the end of life. Sometimes all it takes is a smile or a conversation. The energy at Sarah House is always positive. Feels like home. I have felt genuinely welcomed by the Sarah House family and I’m Happy to be part of it now. Astrid Is SARAH HOUSE.

MEET CARLOS: The SH team has been welcoming to me and it is a great feeling to be part of this team who provides compassionate and whole hearted care to their residents.
