Want to know my favorite tool for beauty texture shots? It's an embossing heat tool! (Google it if you’ve never heard the term!) With this tool you can apply precise heat to a product so that you can shape it or get it out of the container and onto your surface to be photographed. Just watch out because it gets quite hot so don't try to scoop it out with your bare hands! ... When I started my business, the thought of photographing a project using 100% flash or artificial light was intimidating! (Let's be honest- I avoided it at all costs! ) But I've always been someone who likes to step outside of comfort zones (because that's when we really learn and grow)! So this past year I went full force into artificial light, because the more you work with it and learn what works best for your style, the more comfortable you feel! ... So it was fitting that my final project of the year (this fun pink Christmas shoot) was photographed using 100% flash! And 3 of them to be exact! Simple doesn't have to mean boring! Take this photo, for example. Doesn't it just draw you in despite the fact that there is only 1 prop? Maybe it's the use of negative space. Maybe it's the swirl of the orange peel (which I completely surprised myself my pulling off in one try! ). Maybe it's how the product is positioned in a totally different way with leading lines. Whatever it is that draws you in, the point is that it made you stop and look, right? ... Even the tiniest corner in front of a coat closet can be made into a beautiful photo if you get a little creative and have the right light! This was taken in the entryway of the most beautiful Tiburon home (I mean, I may have raved about these reclaimed wood floors for a good 10 minutes ) during a lifestyle fashion shoot for @styletypology It looks like natural light, right? But this was actually taken using an off camera flash with a diffuser (positioned jus...t to the right of the camera) because there was enough light for a glowy background, but not as much in front to light the model's face. It's a super easy setup and I love the soft and bright result! What do you think?
