The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit be by the age of 1! Parents frequently ask, Do you really see cavities this early? The answer is: yes! Unfortunately, it does happen. But, the earlier we catch decay, the more likely we are able to offer minimally invasive treatment options. There are also many other benefits to early dental visits:... We have more time to form a trusting relationship before treatment is needed. This leads to a more positive dental experience! We can provide you and your child with preventative advice. Our goal is to teach you everything you need to know to avoid a cavity! Applying fluoride varnish every 6 months is shown to reduce the risk of future decay. We monitor the growth and development of your child’s dentition to make sure it is on track. We prefer to catch anomalies early on for the best long-term results for your child.

Oraverse reverses the not very fun feeling of being numb! Instead of having a numb lip/cheek/tongue for 2 hours or more after dental treatment, we offer Oraverse to reduce the numb feeling to 1 hour or less. It’s a pretty awesome option for kiddos who dislike the feeling (most of us do!) or have an event or activity to attend soon after their treatment. We offer this to all of our patients who are a good fit!

TOOTHBRUSHES! When do we start using them? Which one is best? Pro-tip: the smaller the brush head, the better for all ages. Small brush heads allow for a greater range of motion (this includes electric brushes!) Silicone brushes... (without real bristles): These are best before teeth arrive. We don’t recommend them for teeth. They help keep the gums clean. Wiping gums clean with a silicone brush or wash cloth before teeth arrive can actually lowers the risk of cavities in the future! Especially after nursing or bottles. Once a tooth is in the mouth, it’s time for some soft bristles! Find the smallest toothbrush head you can at the store. Sizes will start to increase as your child grows. Do you have to use an adult toothbrush at a certain age? Not necessarily, sometimes smaller brushes will allow a child to have an easier time brushing and do a better job. We recommend helping your child brush until about 10 years old. Give them a turn and then go back and check! 10 seems old, but trust us brushing skills take a while to master! And it’s worth it to help develop these skills for the future. Electric brushes: these are great! We love the Oral-b collection with round brush heads. They come in kid and adult sizes (the $30 version will work just as well at removing plaque as the $200 versions). You can start to use them as soon as your child is happy to use them. Electric brushes do most of the work for you and have a convenient 2 minute timer. HAPPY BRUSHING!
