A major thank you goes out to artist Shannon Celia whose solo exhibition Santa Paula Sojourn closes today at the Santa Paula Art Museum. Celia’s exhibit was two years in the making and was first installed at the Museum in June 2020. Shannon weathered the pandemic and the Museum’s temporary closure with grace and humility and we are so fortunate to have seen our beloved Santa Paula through her eyes. Celia’s online exhibit is also available here: https://virtualexhibit.squarespace.com/santapaulasojourn

The countdown to 2021 has begun! While it's "out with the old, in with the new" in pretty much every other respect this year, we felt compelled to bring back one of the Santa Paula Art Museum's most inspiring exhibits from years past for auld lang syne (for the sake of old times)! From 2011 to 2013, Santa Paula artists Gail Pidduck and John Nichols embarked on a community portrait project so that they could better know and appreciate the people in their hometown. Their "Santa... Paula Portrait Project" is now in the Museum's permanent collection, and you can view the exhibition in its entirety online here: https://virtualexhibit.squarespace.com/santapaulaportraitpr One of the quotes that the exhibit leaves viewers with is this one: "We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community." Our thoughts exactly this new year. Image: "Carlos" by John Nichols, 2013, photograph. Part of the "Santa Paula Portrait Project." Collection of the Santa Paula Art Museum.

For this year’s 10th Annual Fine Art Auction Fundraiser, we asked some of our favorite local artists to donate works in support of the Santa Paula Art Museum. We were overwhelmed by their generous response. Today we’d like to spotlight one of those artists: Santa Barbara painter Kevin Gleason (Kevin Gleason Art). Last year, Gleason was awarded the People’s Choice Award from a group of 70 artworks that comprised the Santa Paula Art Museum’s Twelfth Annual Art About Agricultur...e exhibition. It’s easy to see why. Gleason’s art combines two of his greatest loves: exploring beautiful places on foot and drawing with a paintbrush. When selecting a location to set up his easel outdoors, Gleason looks for an intriguing natural subject mixed with a sense of light and atmosphere that tugs at him emotionally. For Kevin, a painting is a handcrafted translation of a moment in time. The fun is in trying to capture the essence of a beautiful place in nature and communicate it to others through paint. Gleason’s auction donation, North of Tajiguas Gaviota Coast, (pictured here) seems to satisfy all of the artist’s hopes. Kevin Gleason lives and paints in Santa Barbara, California. He is a member of the acclaimed Oak Group, whose exhibitions and sales have raised $3 million to support open space preservation since 1986. Visit his website: kevingleasonart.com. You can bid on Gleason's artwork here: https://www.bidsquare.com//kevin-gleason-north-of-tajiguas North of Tajiguas Gaviota Coast by Kevin Gleason, oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. For the next two weeks, we’ll be spotlighting the incredibly talented and generous artists who are featured in the Santa Paula Art Museum’s online Fine Art Auction Fundraiser this year. (You can access the auction here: https://www.bidsquare.com//santa-paula-art-museum-/catalog.) Today is #VeteransDay so we’d like to honor Fillmore artist and veteran Raymond Cuevas (1932-2020). His gorgeous oil painting entitled Hill and Grove, Fillmore is available in our auction. Ray C...uevas was born and raised in Los Angeles, but he spent the final 21 years of his life in Fillmore, California. Earning a scholarship from the Chouinard Art Institute and using the G.I. Bill as a veteran of the Korean War, he continued his studies at Otis Art Institute. After graduating, Cuevas worked as a commercial artist and award-winning graphic designer for more than 25 years. In 1985, Cuevas began painting the unique landscapes of the Los Angeles and San Gabriel areas. After moving to Ventura County in 1999, he committed the bulk of his remaining artistic career to painting the rural landscapes of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Bid on this painting now: https://www.bidsquare.com//ray-cuevas-hill-and-grove-fillm. All proceeds benefit the nonprofit work of the Santa Paula Art Museum.
