Why are my gums shrinking? Gum recession, commonly described as shrinking gums, can be caused by something as simple as brushing too hard or as complex as periodontal disease. Whatever the cause, receding gums requires professional dental care. When the gums pull away from the teeth, the tooth roots become exposed, causing dental sensitivity and leaving room for bacteria to build up and cause more damage below the gum line. Contact our friendly dental team today to schedule a consultation.

What causes bleeding gums? Bleeding gums could be the result of brushing too hard, or it could be a symptom of a more serious issue. The most common cause of bleeding gums is gingivitisthe first stage of gum disease. This condition arises when tartar forms along the gum line and allows disease-causing bacteria to infiltrate and irritate the gingiva. The best way to treat gum disease is with a professional dental cleaning and effective at-home oral hygiene practices.

The Stages of Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease (gum disease) affects millions of American adults at varying degrees. The first and most common stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. People most often recognize gingivitis when they see blood in the sink after brushing or flossing. If gingivitis isn’t treated, it develops into early, moderate, and then advanced periodontitis. During these stages, patients may experience swollen gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, and loose teeth.

Will you need a sinus lift before implant placement? Several additional procedures can be performed prior to dental implant placement to ensure a successful outcome. A sinus lift is required when the patient doesn’t have enough room to secure the implant. During the procedure, our periodontist will carefully lift the floor of the sinus membrane, then fill that area with natural or artificial bone. Additional procedures are only performed when absolutely necessary! Be sure to get a second opinion on your treatment plan.

Do you really need a deep dental cleaning? A deep dental cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, is often recommended for patients with gum disease and chronic periodontitis, which affects 47.2% of American adults over 30. In certain stages of gum disease, patients develop deep pockets between the gums and teeth that a regular dental cleaning won’t effectively clean. Scaling and root planing allows our periodontist to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, to the bottom of the pockets.

Gum disease and diabetes The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases reports a clear connection between diabetes and gum disease. Diabetes can lead to a high level of glucose in the saliva which promotes the growth of harmful bacteria. The saliva combined with food creates plaque, which turns into tartar that eats away at the gum tissue. Patients with diabetes should take precautions (such as visiting our periodontist more often) to reduce their risk of developing periodontal disease.
