Santa Catalina's next Head of School, Dr. Barbara Ostos, has written a letter to our community. Read it here: https://bit.ly/2T8ov37 We look forward to getting to know her and her family!
Just a few treats for the end of your week. Cake Auction came with a twist this year. Seniors still baked and decorated elaborate cakes for Spirit Day, and paraded them around Sullivan Court to the oohs and ahs of the other classes. But instead of bidding on a cake to take and eat, the classes judged the edible creations in a range of categories and bid on special experiences. And the cakes were as spectacular as always! Congratulations to Juliette '23, who earned silver in the 100 meters at the CCS track and field finals! Her time of 12.66 is the second fastest in school history. She also finished ninth in the long jump at 16 feet, 1 inch. Way to go! #catalinagirlscan #trulycatalina

Happy retirement to Coach Jim Morton, who has been so many things to so many people for the past 41 years! He will be greatly missed, but we wish him the best of luck in his new adventures. We love you! #trulycatalina
Faculty and staff gathered for the last time in the 2020-21 school year! We can't thank them enough for making this year a success! #trulycatalina
A piece of art by Sophia Lamarque '21 will hang in the U.S. Capitol building for a year! Sophia's "Another Generation," created with gel pens, took first place in the 2021 Congressional Art Competition for California's 20th Congressional District. In addition, Tylor Mehringer '22 earned honorable mention for her piece, "Lost in Flowers." Congrats to Sophia and Tylor! Read more: https://bit.ly/3gplZhg #catalinagirlscan #trulycatalina
We are excited to share that Santa Catalina has selected Dr. Barbara Ostos as its fifth Head of School. Her tenure will begin on July 1, 2022, following the retirement of current Head of School Meg Bradley. Barbara has spent more than 20 years as a teacher, grade-level leader, dean of students, divisional principal, and most recently as Assistant Head of Catlin Gabel, a nationally recognized K-12 independent school in Portland, Oregon. In addition to her deep background in ed...ucation and experience in independent school leadership, the Search Committee was drawn to her warmth, enthusiasm, and ability to connect with a variety of people from all of Santa Catalina's constituencies. Please join us in welcoming Barbara and her family to the Santa Catalina community! For more information about Barbara and the search process, visit our Head of School Search page: https://bit.ly/2T8ov37.

We are inspired today and every day by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Please take a moment today to reflect on the importance of light, love, kindness, and empathy. We are grateful Catalina is a place where students develop these traits in the pursuit of a better world. #MLK2021 #MLKDay
Today was Report Card Assembly! In addition to recognizing students who made honor roll and ranked at the top of their class, we celebrated Courtesy Award recipients. The award honors those who exemplify courtesy in the broadest sensethoughtful and kind, generous with their time, and caring toward the feelings and welfare of others. Best of all, recipients are nominated by their teachers and peers! Congratulations to all of our studentswe're so proud of the incredibly hard work you are doing in these difficult times! #catalinagirlscan #trulycatalina
It's so great to see students on campus again! Several freshmen started in their learning cohorts on Monday (did you spot the crates?), and students from all grades return for co-curriculars this week. Some alumnae may be reminded of the times when they got to do their nightly study sessions in the library instead of Study Hall! #TrulyCatalina
It's good to be back! We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas break!
Thanks to the parents who joined us for last week's Thursday Wine Down featuring a virtual game of Codenames! We even had a parent join us all the way from South Korea! We've been grateful to be able to spend this time together.
We're excited to join our fellow Monterey County private schools for a virtual high school information night on November 5 at 6:00 p.m.! This is a great way to learn about each school's unique mission, culture, and educational approach. Four students received recognition in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program, including one semifinalist. The honor means they were among the top scorers of 1.5 million students who took the 2019 PSAT. Congratulations to these students! Read more: https://bit.ly/31oMRXI
This week we started a Five Weeks of Service Challenge, with a different theme each week. Each day, Dean of Students Katherine Busch sends out a list of ideas for how we can do service, no matter where we are. This week is about taking care of our environment, and so far we have learned about ways to be conscious consumers and how to compost. We can't wait to see what's next!
Whether freshman or senior, physics students are doing lots of hands-on learning at home! Freshmen in Conceptual Physics made good use of their physics kits, building a lever postal scale and a ship’s lantern for their unit on inertia, force, and Newton’s 1st Law of Motion. Seniors in AT Physics with Trigonometry worked on their estimation skills, using a variety of tools and techniques to figure out the measurements of everything from a car to a favorite walk to the thickness of a sheet of paper. We love seeing distance learning in action!
Today’s Catalina Club Spotlight celebrates Accents! As the dance club on campus, Accents gives members the opportunity to choreograph, perform, and express themselves through movement. Strong and dedicated dancers, the members are passionate about their craft. Keep a lookout for more club spotlights to come!
Shout out to our amazing teachers for #WorldTeachersDay! We are so grateful for your commitment, adaptability, and enthusiasm today and every day.
Juniors in the Marine Ecology Research Program got to hear from a special guest speaker this week: Audrey Bennett '17, a MERP veteran who's currently a senior at Stanford! Audrey, who's studying biology and education, talked about her experience doing research as an undergraduate, working on projects about surfgrass, deep sea squid, and more. She had lots of valuable insight and advice for the juniors, who are about to undertake their own independent research projects. Thanks for coming back, Audrey! #catalinagirlscan
Thank you to everyone who joined our wine and cheese parent social last week! We hope you enjoyed getting to know each other better. And a special thanks to our presenters, Catalina dad Christian Pillsbury of Eden Rift Vineyards and Kent Torrey of The Cheese Shop!
"Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you." Ruth Bader Ginsburg RIP, #RBG. Thank you for your tireless fight for women's equality. You were a true pioneer.
We had some special guests at yesterday's virtual Assembly! Sister Claire and Sister Christine said hi to our students, shared their favorite Catalina memories and experiences, and offered all of us a few words of encouragement. Thank you, Sisters!
