Hi Stingray! Here are the match reports for this last weekend's games: U14 Match Report The U14s played a spirited set of games against a combined Santa Ynez/orca and then Central Coast. Both games were back-and-forth with many lead changes and swings in momentum.... The stingray started off fast with Try’s from Luca and Elias. Tough defense from Ryan, Cameron and Diego kept Santa Ynez in check most of the game. Ultimately the stingrays prevailed 25-20. The second game against Central Coast was a much closer match. At the end it was a 20 to 20 tie. Strong tries by Joe and Elias tied the game at the end. Many of the stingrays had good runs including Davey, Cash, and Luca. Man of the match was Elias. The stingrays have a lot to work on and we look forward to getting back to training this week! U18 SB vs Orca/CC Saturday was a big day for the HS stingrays as we faced a combine select side of the best of Orca and Santa Maria. The game kicked off and we had a beautiful try from Anthony in the first five minutes, this was returned by orca and then another try by us and again one from orca. It seemed the tempo was going to be try for try the whole game. We lost a player early in the game and had to play man down for most of the match. This presented another challenge as we now didn’t have a hooker or an 8man depending on the play. Regardless the stingrays stepped up to the challenge and over took the try for try pace. Just before half time, Thomas had an outstanding break down the left wing to seal a comfortable 2 try lead for the stingrays. Going into the second half we had new talent on the field. ZinZan, August and Jasper all took the field for the first time. Also a huge shout out to Luca and Elias who played up from U14 to experience a higher level of rugby. No one disappointed and Elias even scored a try for the HS team off of a beautiful chip kick. As the final whistle blew, the stingrays had a comfortable 46 to 22 win over the all star combine team. Man on the match went to Owen Reese. I put Owen in at flanker as a utility player and he showed tremendous composure, structure and thing I always strive for, stingray heart. Owen took on entire rucks by himself and managed to be a huge disruptor, turning the ball back over to the stingrays on 4 or 5 different occasions just due to his passion in play. This greatly contributed to our victory. Congratulations Owen. The stingrays still have a long way to go this season with regards to structure and discipline. There is still a bit of lingering football mentality of showboating that we will be striving to clean up. Overall we the coaches are proud of the stingray performance always happy for a win, but eager to improve. Looking forward to a big week of training this week with clear objectives of what we need to work on moving forward. -Sb Coaches

2/22/2020 Match Report U14 SB vs KERN Santa Barbara had an excellent and spirited match against the Kern U14. Kern brough 18 boys who looked very large and tough to face us, and Santa Barbara had exactly a 12 man side. ... When the first whistle blew, it seemed it was anybody’s guess as to how the game would go, but in size it seemed the Stingrays were at a disadvantage. The Santa Barbara forwards had tremendous structure and stood up to the big Kern side in physicality and blew them out of the water in skill. This heart and composition from the forwards allowed Elias to spread the ball out wide to the backs. From there it was a foot race, and Santa Barbara was Usain Bolt! 2 tries from Elias, 1 from Waylon, 1 from Luca, 1 from Grady, and 1 from Dallas- all in the first half. Manny had an incredible game from the boot standpoint and converted all but one of the tries. In the second half, Kern really brought it and stopped us from scoring any more tries. Cash had one stellar tackle on the side line that stopped the Kern wing from running one in, and Isaiah really brought a ton of defensive intensity in the forwards. As the final whistle blew the score was Kern- 5, SB- 40. Man of the match went to captain Elias who had a standout performance running his team and controlling the ball. Congrats U14s on another very skilled game!

Match Report for last weekend: 2/8/2020 SB vs SY U14 Santa Barbara had an excellent and spirited match against the Santa Ynez u14. SY opened the match with an early try by powering through the u14’s. It seemed due to size, SB may be at a disadvantage, but with great composure and leadership shown by Elias, the 14’s answered back. Luca had a physical and impressive game and Cash had some amazing tackles. Going into halftime, AJ smashed one in to tie the game up.... Entering into the second half, the stingrays started to get overpowered by the bigger SY team. Everyone played really well and it was nice to see Waylon back on the pitch. The final whistle blew at 15-10 to SY. We couldn’t have been more proud of how well and hard the Stingrays played at this upper level. It was a tough decision, but Man-of-the-Match went to Cameron,who played an incredibly physical and heart full game. U16 The U16’s were composed an interesting lineup of all boys that usually play for the HS team and a mix of some U14’s playing up to fill out the side. Because a number of our HS starters were not age eligible, we had u16 and u14 players in new positions such as Owen at hooker, Dylan at prop, Tommy at fly half, and so on. The Stingrays did a great job taking on these roles and had new starters on the field such as Jasper, August and Zin Zan. The Stingrays took an early control of the game and continued to take that to the final whistle. All the boys played well once they really stuck their heads into it. The most physical player on the field, in my opinion, was Caden who stole the ball multiple times and had some great breaks. There were a number of impressive plays, but none more so than a remarkable up- field chip kick by Lancelot that Owen caught and ran in for a try! Lancelot earned Man-of-the-Match for controlling the field and slowing the game down to maintain Stingrays control. His game-making decisions lead to multiple tries. Congrats to the Stingrays on a great day of rugby!
