Don’t Become a Santa Barbara Bike Theft Victim The Santa Barbara Police Department is seeing an increase in bicycle thefts. Bicycles are commonly stolen after they are left unattended in publicly accessible areas. Many bicycle thieves carry tools and target bicycles with low-end locks that can be defeated with inexpensive, readily-available tools. Thieves have more recently been targeting high-end bicycles that are inadequately secured to vehicles (i.e. in the bed of trucks o...r attached to vehicle mounted bike racks). SBPD has taken reports for over 320 stolen bicycles this year, 159 of which were valued over $950. With the increased usage of exotic, lightweight materials, as well as batteries, bicycles are becoming more and more expensive. Bicycle thefts are often unreported, because owners do not have serial numbers or suspect information. On average in the U.S., only 56 percent of bicycle thefts were reported to the police. Here are some things to remember to decrease the chances of becoming a victim: Store your bicycle indoors, in a bicycle locker, or inside of a locked vehicle. If you must leave your bicycle unattended outdoors, use a U-style lock. Most bicycle locks on the market only serve as deterrents to theft. Cable or chain-based locks are easily overcome by inexpensive, readily-available tools. Register your bike. SBbike.org https://www.sbbike.org/registration, one of the region’s bicycle advocacy coalitions, works with the non-profit Bike Index https://bikeindex.org/, a national bicycle registry. Take a photo of your bike when you buy it, identifying any distinguishing features; Bike Index accepts photos to assist others in identifying your stolen bike. It’s a helpful tool to increase the chance of being reunited with your bike. The link to the national site claims they’ve helped recover more than $12M in bikes. Record the serial number of your bike, as well as the make, model and other features. The serial number is the most important piece of information -- it’s the only way of identifying a bike beyond all doubt. All bikes have a unique serial number, usually engraved beneath the bottom bracket (the part of the frame that the pedals go through). Stolen bicycles are often repainted, or otherwise modified to change their appearance. A serial number is the most definitive way to identify your stolen bicycle. File an online or in-person police report, with your bicycle’s serial number, immediately after the theft occurs. If the bicycle cannot be matched to a police report, there are fewer tools at the officer’s disposal to recover the bike, if seen.

Officers Nab Alleged Armed Robber Slowed by Holiday Traffic On September 7, 2020 at 4:56 P.M. the Santa Barbara Police Department received a 911 call reporting an armed robbery that had just occurred at a gas station in the 3800 Block of State Street. Officers arrived within minutes and interviewed the reporting party as well as several witnesses. Officers quickly gleaned a description of a get-away vehicle, distinctive features of the culprit, and the last known direction of... travel. That information was broadcast back to responding Officers and other allied agencies. A responding Santa Barbara Police Officer that was heading northbound on 101 scanned southbound traffic and spotted a vehicle of interest matching the description provided by witnesses. That Officer was able to take an offramp and immediately re-enter southbound 101 in an effort to catch up with the suspect vehicle. Southbound traffic was heavy due to Labor Day revelers returning home -- making it easier for Officers to converge on the suspect vehicle. With the help of CHP, Santa Barbara Police Officers conducted a high-risk stop and immediately brought the suspect into custody without incident. The alleged armed robber, now identified as Russell Bradley Wallace, a 29-year-old Ventura resident, was found with multiple pieces of evidence linking him back to the robbery. Recovered from the vehicle were a loaded handgun, an AR15 assault rifle, numerous loaded magazines, along with an armored vest and ballistic helmet. Wallace was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail for armed robbery and weapons related charges.

Santa Barbara Police Logs Sixth NARCAN Save Preservation and Sanctity of Life is the Chief Objective On August 25, 2020 at approximately 1 P.M., the Santa Barbara Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting an unconscious, non-breathing male inside Alameda Park.... Officers arrived, assessed the male and conducted a cursory interview of bystanders. Officers determined the male was suffering from a possible acute overdose of drugs. Officers quickly administered NARCAN and started rescue breaths. Santa Barbara Fire arrived and took over life saving techniques. Within a minute the male was fully revived, conscious and breathing on his own. On scene medical experts determined that the NARCAN dose reversed the harmful effects of the narcotics and likely saved the man’s life. In the last year, the Police Department attributes six lives saved because of the administration of NARCAN by Officers. NARCAN Nasal Spray, the first nasal formulation of naloxone, is FDA approved for the treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. Designed for use in the community, NARCAN Nasal Spray is needle-free and ready to use. NARCAN Nasal Spray counteracts the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose. Since most accidental overdoses occur in a home setting, it was developed for first responders, as well as family, friends, and caregiverswith no medical training required. However, the Santa Barbara Police Department provides extensive training on how to properly administer NARCAN in the field. Each Patrol Officer carries NARCAN in their unit. Annually, the Santa Barbara Police Department applies for and receives medical clearance to use NARCAN from the State’s Chief Medical Officer at the California Department of Public Health in the form of a Standing Order. Additionally, the Police Department receives the actual NARCAN devices from the Naloxone Distribution Project (NDP) which funded by U.S. Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration and administered by the California Department of Health Care Services. The Project serves to combat opioid overdose-related deaths throughout California. The NDP aims to address the opioid crisis by reducing opioid overdose deaths through the provision of free naloxone, in its nasal spray formulation. Since October 2018, the NDP had distributed over 440,000 units of naloxone, and recorded over 19,100 overdose reversals. If you know someone that suffers from an opioid addiction, you too may qualify for free NARCAN. Visit https://www.dhcs.ca.gov//Naloxone_Distribution_Project.asp(NDP,in%20its%20nasal%20spray%20formulation. to learn more.
