Ever since her first day of kindergarten, SJCL alumnae and Appellate Advocacy Professor, Jennifer Oleksa (JD ‘16), knew she wanted to be a lawyer just like her mom. She followed in the footsteps of her mom and aunt, both of whom attended SJCL, and is now a Deputy Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the California Attorney General's Office. Congratulations to Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris for becoming the first Black person, first woman and first South Asian American in her position! In 2015, our alumnae, Jenn Oleksa (Law '16), had the honor of meeting then Attorney General Harris during the second week of working for her.

While it's been a trying year for our entire SJCL family in many ways, we're so thankful for each and everyone's health and safety this year. We've all faced a new wave of adversity and challenges this year and we proudly overcame each of them, together. Thank you and we hope everyone has a happy holiday.

Congrats to the Marcus A. Mancini Esq. scholarship winner, Rosie Palomino! "I applied for this scholarship knowing I was not an Italian law student but I shared a story about how my abuelita was born in Mexico and how she came to the U.S. just as many Italian Americans have. I wrote about how my abuelita worked piscando y empacando uva for an Italian family for many years (harvesting and packing grapes). I explained how my abuelita came to the U.S. in search of a better life and I further explained how I am working very hard to show her how thankful I am for her struggles and sufrimiento in search of that American Dream."

While the pandemic changed the way we taught classes this semester, it didn't deter any of our dedicated students from enrolling and some said it even fueled their desire.
