The estate of pioneering lesbian filmmaker and alum Barbara Hammer recently donated $27,000 to SF State’s Queer Cinema Project, matching a challenge grant from the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation. The School of Cinema and the Queer Cinema Project are vital parts of the University, Hammer’s widow Florrie Burke said. To support them is an honor and a testament to the beginning of Barbara Hammer’s long career.

School of Cinema Director Celine Parreñas Shimizu revisits the gruesome death of Celine Navarro, a 28-year-old Filipina woman buried alive in the Sacramento Delta in 1932. Shimizu’s new documentary The Celine Archive recasts Navarro as a feminist heroine who refused to be silenced by her community.
