Call it the Western States hangover or just the holiday weekend, but there will be no organized group run this Saturday. We’ve created a route on our @strava Club page, if you wish to run it independently or with friends. Both shops will maintain their normal hours on July 3rd but will be closed in July 4th in observance of Independence Day. We’ll be back to our regular cadence beginning July 10th, with a special group run led by one of the Running Team ambassadors. Happy 4th... of July everyone! _ : @tonywithasony #independenceday #4thofjuly

The last ambassador for the SFRC Running Team we’d like to introduce you to is the awesome Alyssa Mahoney (@alyssakmahoney) of Sausalito, CA! Alyssa is originally from New York but has since made the Bay Area her home. Running for her has been a near-daily practice for 10+ years and her favorite distance is the marathon, which she’s enjoyed the most from the handful of time she’s ran them. When Alyssa isn’t working a career as a programmer/analyst in healthcare, you will often see her zooming around her bike or somewhere on the trails.

On the 4th day of Statesmas As a proud sponsor of the most prestigious and first 100-mile race in North America, San Francisco Running Company would like to wish the best of luck to the runners of our community who will be making that journey of a lifetime from Olympic Valley to Auburn at the Western States Endurance Run this weekend. As per tradition (sort of), we will not be having an organized group run this Saturday at our Mill Valley shop. The store's hours will op...erate as normal but our San Anselmo shop will be closed on Saturday. If you still wanted to get out for some trail miles, we’re sure there will be many likeminded folks in the parking lot, ready to do the same Saturday morning This year’s running of WS100 will be broadcasted with hosts Corrine Malcolm and Dylan Bowman for the full 30-hours of the race on the Western States YouTube channel, including live footage, interviews, and analysis. Lock in Saturday morning and/or track your runners on UltraLive ! #SeeYouAtStates

Who’s been watching the Olympic Trials this week?! The Trials are taking place at the newly renovated Hayward Field in Eugene, OR and we have to say, Tracktown, USA has never looked better. To commemorate, we’re proud to present the limited Olympic Trials collection from @nike as a cross-section of the past meeting the future, bringing the magic of the historic Hayward Field into the modern era. The tees incorporate the mountains and forests that surround the University of Or...egon, including the historic look back by the legendary Steve Prefontaine. _ We also have restocked some of our favorite sunglasses from @goodr. We’ve seen some of the Trials runners rocking them and all we have to say is

There’s been a lot of questions about our events that are scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, June 22nd. We apologize for all the confusion. Originally, we had planned to have the Run Strength & Mobility session with @jennymaieryoga at our Mill Valley shop and the VECTIV x TSWELLER launch event with @ts.weller at our San Anselmo shop. We take responsibility for booking two events and leading to the confusion. For tomorrow, we are continuing ONLY with the @thenorthface_trail VECT...IV x TSWELLER event at our San Anselmo shop from 6-8 pm. We will see everyone there! We apologize to everyoneand to Jenny, herselfwho was planning on attending the event at the Mill Valley shop. She’s a great friend of the shop and a great resource for run and strength/mobility training. We fully endorse her for all her services in helping runners achieve their goals and staying healthy.

There is something magical about running in the Marin Headlands, where you can experience some of the most fun climbs that reward you with views for days! I have always associated SFRC runs with good vibes, gorgeous trails, and post-run coffee at @equatorcoffees , and breakfast sandos at Good Earth. This week, our good friend and Running Team ambassador, @rundezzyrun , will be at the helm leading us through the run on one of his favorite Headlands loops. You won’t want to m...iss it! Also on hand will be our NEW sponsors from @gelvio_us, an SF-based online store with curated snacks & drinks for everyday fuel. They’ll be providing pre- and post-run snacks for everyone so make sure to come out and see what their services are all about! As always, you can find this week’s route on our @strava Club. We’ll see you at 8 am at the MV shop

VECTIV x Travis Weller Express your run in a new way. The North Face is partnering with California-based designer and ultrarunner, Travis Weller, to introduce a limited edition design for the VECTIV Collection. Inspired by the Western States 100, the Travis Weller print and color story represent the landscape from foothill to high country.... When I think about Western States and the times I’ve made the journey to watch the race, there are three distinct sections of the course that stand out in my mind. Each of these sections have a unique personality and bring out the unique personalities in those participating in the race. I created a color story for based on the specific environment and runner’s emotions found along the course. #PowerFurther #thenorthface

SATURDAY MORNINGS The ritual was always to meet in front of the MV shop around 8 am, listen to @1jorgemaravilla tell us the morning’s route, then heading out on the Marin Headlands trails. No matter how the runs went, we reconvened afterwardeither at the shop, @equatorcoffees, or @goodearthnaturaland regaled each other with what was happening in our lives, running or otherwise. THAT’s what we miss the most. THAT’s what we hope to get back to soon. For now though, we wil...l be posting Whenever Runs for you to do at your leisure each week. Make sure to join our @strava Club by clicking the LINK IN BIO for first dibs on the routesand to read the description penmanship by the one and only, SFRC's own Matt Mitchell. Bring a friend or two to do them with you, but not many more. Respect others, wear a mask, and make sure to swing by the shop afterward to tell us how your run went. : @tonywithasony

Well, this is it. As we close the finals days of 2020, this also brings us the final athlete feature of this incredible 100 Buckle Project. This is the one and only, SFRC’s end boss Ted Knudsen of San Rafael, CA! We’ve been using the noun legend a lot lately, but Ted’s resume and legacy fit that bill to a T. He’s been a major figure in the ultrarunning world, especially here in the Bay Area, for many decades. However, as we know from this project, it all had to star...t somewhere. Ted started running ultras in 1995 but it took 10 years for him to finally make the jump to the 100-mile distance. Luckily, back in those days, there was a 50% chance of getting into Western States as a first-time lottery participant and his name was one of the ones that were called for the big dance in December 2005. His experience leading up to the race was marred with injuries throughout training so getting to the start line was its own victory. The following year was a very hot year with a finish rate of 52%. He kept telling himself to move forward and only quit if he didn’t make a time cutoff. Since then, he’s been completely hooked and has completed 3 more WS100 and earned a pair of silver buckles. Here’s more of the runner digest on Ted: # of 100-mile races completed: 12 First 100-Miler: 2006 Western States Endurance Run Bucket List race: Grand Slam of Ultrarunning Favorite trail: North side of Mount Tam Shoe of choice: HOKA ONE ONE Clifton Outside of running (is there life outside of running?), Ted has worked a 20+ year career as a software engineer. He continues to be fully immersed in the ultrarunning world where he regularly volunteers at races, provides free runner tracking services through ultralive.net, and is the owner of SFRC. He has two kids, Ryan and Hannah, and lives with his girlfriend, Amy, and dog Olive, who he regularly runs with on most mornings from Ross Commons. It’s hard to mention ultrarunning in this area without including Ted’s name in the conversation. Thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do in this community! Alright SFRC fam, we’re heading into the last week of 2020 (good riddance?) and we got a good one for today’s 100 Buckle Project runner. This is Ralf Elsaesser (@ralfelsaesser) of Milbrae, CA! As a transplant to the Bay Area in 2000 from Germany, Ralf’s first ultra-distance race experience was at the European favorite, @lavaredoultratrail 118km, in the Italian Alps. He was able to finish a few hours behind 2014 winners @rorybosio and @antonkrupicka, and that experience... got him hooked! This led Ralf to his first 100-miler at the 2015 Tahoe Rim Trail 100, a race which he remembers as a brutal slog on the second loop because of the evening hours up until midnight to the Diamond Peak aid station. The key takeaway he took from this race experience was seeing the human body’s ability to recover from a near-dead state to running again all the way to the finish line in the early morning hours. Here’s more of the runner digest on Ralf: # of 100-mile races completed: 5 First 100-Miler: Tahoe Rim Trail 100Bucket List race: @hardrock100m Favorite trail: Christmas Valley Trail (Meyers/South Lake Tahoe) Shoe of choice:@nikerunning Wildhorse Outside of running, Ralf finds himself trying to balance the ever-stressful task of his career in construction management with spending time with his familywife, Clara, sons Joshua (16) & Evan (14), and dog, Shasta (2)and also trying to get out on the trails. When he signs up for races, his wife tells him, You’re on your own. I’m not helping you, but she always seems to show up come race day...thank you, Clara! Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Ralf, and for being a part of this community! Also, a big shout out to the #MontaraCowboys. ROUND 1 FINALE With Sundays being the final day each week to submit an effort in the @trialsofmilesracing CHASE THE THRONE virtual elimination tournament, leave it to the trail runners to procrastinate on speed work. Once the fog ultimately settled (or didn’t), a few of the speedy runners here in the SFRC community showed what some mountain legs could do on the flats by throwing down some of the top times for the whole tournament. On the topic of slaydies, a huge kudos and congratulations goes out to one of our first ambassadors and friends, Devon Yanko, for her amazing effort last week. ICYMI, Devon ran a 50k time trial in an incredible time of 3:15:39 (that’s 6:18 pace for 31 miles!), which is 2 minutes off the women’s American record that has been untouched for 37 years. Despite having a year of many let-ups and let-downs, Devon bear-and-grinned her way through the year, often supporting ma...ny of her friends in their own individual efforts. However, with the year drawing to a close, she showed everyone what a year of unprecedented fitnessand maybe some race karmacan do. Devonwe’ve ran out of expletives that does justice to what you’ve accomplished this year but we think 2021 is gonna shape up to be something fierce. _ : @seesarahrunsf See more

Let’s keep the buckle train rolling with today’s 100 Buckle Project athlete, Brian Mulholand (@pnutzo) of Concord, CA! Brian’s first 100-miler was at the Tahoe Rim Trail 100, finishing the first loop in an easy 13 hours with the next 20 following hours being a blister-filled death march (we’re sure many others can relate). The takeaways from that first experience was a testament to the wisdom we all get from these ultra crazy long distances, with Brian’s being: ...1) keep walking and you will get there, 2) we perform better when we involve our team and community, and 3) 100s are more an adventure than a race. Here’s the runner digest on Brian: # of 100-mile races completed: 7 First 100-Miler: Tahoe Rim Trail 100 Bucket List race: Hardrock 100 Favorite trail: French Trail (East Bay) Shoe of choice:@nikerunning Wildhorse Brian’s buckle (2nd photo) is from the Western States 100, which he was a lucky one ticket lottery winner. He attributes his finish to all his close friends waiting for him to hit the track at Placer High. Outside of running, Brian is a banker and says he owes all his success to his kids and partner, Hale. When asked about his running goals, he says, I’m just trying to be the Danny Diaz of the SFRC squad#MCFARLAND. Thank you for sharing your 100-mile journey with us, Brian, and we can’t wait for you to have the chance to toe another start line! Rolling into this last week of October (or has it been March for the past year?), we have today’s 100 Buckle Project runnerplease say hello to Kara Teklinski (@tektwin2)! If the community of Bay Area ultrarunning was a corporation, Kara would be on the board of directors. In addition to giving back to the community, she’s an accomplished ultrarunner herself having completed six 100-milers throughout her running career. Here’s the digest on Kara:... # of 100-mile races completed: 6 First 100-Miler: Zion 100 Bucket List race: Yeti 100 Endurance RunFavorite trail: We are lucky to have over 500 miles of trails throughout Marin County, why choose just one? But if I mustmaybe Coastal Trail. Shoe of choice:@brooksrunning Cascadia 12 In a rare moment for the 100 Buckle Project, Kara is the first person to have completed her bucket list race before her photos were taken (2nd photo). This race was meaningful for her due to coming off injuries that kept her away from the 100-mile distance for over 3 years. She set a sub-24 hour goal and ran it alone without any crew, pacers, or support outside of the race. Spoiler alert: she absolutely crushed it by going sub-20 and got 3rd female and 11th overall, rain and all! Outside of running, Kara works as Chief of Staff, Global Clinical Operations for Roche/Genentech. Additionally, she’s part of the @worldbicyclerelief Regional Advisory Council and takes care of operations for Ultralive.net. Kara, we feel so lucky to have you in this community and we hope 2021 will give us opportunities to see what you will continue to do at 100-mile races! We’re excited to present today’s Friday 100 Buckle Project runnerthe incomparable Tony Nguyen (@endorphindude) of Antioch, CA! Tony’s running and 100-mile journey started when he was a young kid who always got picked last in PE. As he grew up, he became an insulin-dependent couch potato until one day, a heart attack scare forced him to wake up. Eventually, he took on the persona as Endorphin Dude, using his infectious personality and jumping into the world of m...arathoning. In 2011, he completed 52 marathons in 52 weeks before jumping into the ultrarunning scene. His first 100-mile finish was at the Run-de-Vous 100 Mile Endurance Race after DNFing at mile 88 of his first 100-mile attempt. Here are some other of Tony’s stats: # of 100-mile races completed: 9 First 100-Miler: Run-de-Vous 100 Bucket List race: @wser Favorite trail: Tennessee Valley Trail (Marin County)Shoe of choice:@hokaoneone The buckle featured in Tony’s photo is from one of the few 100-mile races that took place in 2020, the Burning River 100 in Ohio. He fought hard through the Ohio heat to earn his 9th buckle after two previous heartbreaking DNFs at this race. Outside of running, Tony is an office manager at a physical therapy clinic in San Francisco. When he’s not working or on the trails, he’s always on the search for the perfect bowtie. His favorite condiment is mayonnaise, which he’ll carry little packets on his long runs. We’re so lucky to have you in this community, Tony, and we’re sure many of the people whose lives you’ve touched will say the same! For today’s Wednesday 100 Buckle Project runner, we have Lucas Horan (@ho_ranandran)! Driven by exploration, Lucas is constantly on a journey and often uses the 100-mile race distance to explore new trails or test the limits of the body during a race. He enjoys the competitive aspect of ultra-long races but also for all the amazing people he meets during a 100-miler. Here’s Lucas’ runner digest:... # of 100-mile races completed: 5 First 100-Miler: @javelinajundred Bucket List race: Hardrock 100 Favorite trail: Harvey Quadbanger (Berkeley, CA) Shoe of choice:@altrarunning Lucas’ most unique buckle (2nd photo) is from his latest 100-mile race, the King Slayer 100, that took place in July. The race was put on fatass style as a 100-mile loop through the East Bay parks by Martinez’s local legend and race director, Loren Baker, after the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 was canceled. Additionally, Lucas committed himself to help his friend Hillary Garcia finish her first 100-miler. The race served as an inspirational experience to be part of someone’s first 100-miler! Away from running, Lucas used his sense of exploration to make a career out of molecular biology. As a scientist, he’s been fortunate to work with a group of scientists and visionaries to create new T-cell therapies that are treating patients with liver cancer. Fun fact: today’s 100 Buckle Project runner was one of SFRC’s very first employees. Here’s @jennymaier of (now) Bainbridge Island, WA! Jenny is very much a part of the SFRC family, having worked at the shop when it first opened from 2013-2016. We also take partial credit for her meeting her husband @thedenuch through the SFRC community Here’s some more info on Jenny:... # of 100-mile races completed: 3 First 100-Miler: @javelinajundred Bucket List race: @wser Favorite trail: French Trail (East Bay) Shoe of choice:@hokaoneone Jenny’s first 100-mile race (2nd photo) was at the Javelina Jundred in AZ. She finished the race in 27h49m and calls it the toughest test of mental fortitude I’ve ever had. When she crossed the finish line of the race about 4-hours after her expected time, she yelled at @lord_balls (the race director of the Western States 100 who was spectating), Never again! Well, true to the crazy things we say at the end of races, she went back to complete the race again in 2018 and 2019. Outside of running, Jenny is a yoga instructor, as well as a strength and running coach. She and Chris got married in January of this year and the pair moved from Berkeley, CA to Bainbridge Island, WA at the end of August with their dog, Henry. Every year since 2016, Jenny volunteers as part of the safety sweep team at the Dipsea Race. Thanks so much for always giving back to the community! The 1-2 punch! Today’s Friday 100 Buckle Project athlete is SFRC San Anselmo managerand Wednesday’s runner, Linn Pepper Secreto’s husband Louis Secreto of San Rafael, CA! Louis is SFRC family of the highest order and you will often see him blazing through the trails on the north side of Mount Tam either on foot or on a single-speed mountain bike. In addition to running, he comes from an athletic background of cycling and climbing, including being a former Category 1 ...rider. Here’s Louis 100-mile digest: # of 100-mile races completed: 5 First 100-Miler: Western States Endurance Run Bucket List race: Tor des Géants Favorite trail: (Not tellingyou’ll have to run the North Side with me.) Shoe of choice: Salomon Running While the Western States 100 is many peoples’ bucket list race, Louis had the good fortune of having it be his first; one ticket, first try! The race went as well as it could from start to finish, with the exception of being stuck behind a skunk on the trail for 10ish minutes! For the past 7 years since he’s helped pace numerous runners at WS who have finished top 10/top 20. Outside of running, Louis served 4-years in the US Army and was deployed in the Middle East (Operation Desert Shield/Storm & assistance to Kurdish civilians). His hobbies now include spending time with Linn and their dog, Molly the SFRC shop dog, with the trio regularly taking road trips and running in the mountains together. Happy Wednesday, all! Today’s 100 Buckle Project runner is another dear friend of SFRCLinn Secreto (@linnsecreto) of San Rafael, CA! Linn has been running for about 10 years, back when she was living in Philadelphia and her partner/SFRC-San-Anselmo-manager, @loupepper, invited her to his Thursday night group trail run. The rest, they say, is history. Here are some of Linn’s running stats:... # of 100-mile races completed: 3 First 100-Miler: Rio Del Lago 100 Bucket List race: @utmbmontblanc Favorite trail: Fish Grade (Marin County) Shoe of choice:@hokaoneone The three 100-mile races she’s completed have been at the popular Rio Del Lago 100. Feeling she had room to improve, she kept returning to the race and was able to finish the 2019 running of RDL 3.5 hours faster than her first year! Linn has mentioned that she may be 3-and-done with structured 100-milers for now because of how much more appealing mountain adventures have been for her. She caught the bug when she and Louis did the Tour du Mont Blanc, then had planned on doing similar trips in the future. However, this summer's intention of going back to Europe was forced to pivot and they instead camped and explored different parts of the Sierra each weekend. Being able to go long and easy on these adventures have allowed Linn to fully enjoy the vistas and alpine swims, along with their dog Molly leading the way. Outside of running, Linn worked as a pastry chef for many years and still dabbles in making a fancy cake for special occasions. New week, new runner feature! For today’s Monday 100 Buckle Project athlete, we have a dear friend of SFRC, Hal Rosenberg (@hrsports) of Mill Valley, CA! It’s no surprise that runningespecially running 100 milescan take its toll on the body, hence why having an invaluable sports medicine resource like Hal in the SFRC community has proven to be a huge benefit. For 19 years, he’s been helping Bay Area runners and athletes rehabilitate from injuries at Mt Tam Sport & Sp...ine and keep them running healthy. Here’s Hal’s personal runner digest: # of 100-mile races completed: 1 First 100-Miler: Javelina Jundred Endurance Run Bucket List race: Western States Endurance Run Favorite trail: Nora Trail (Mount Tamalpais) Shoe of choice: Salomon Running Hal’s first 100-miler (2nd photo) was at the Javelina Jundred, which he describes as the perfect day to play on the trails. The race had special meaning for him having grown up in Phoenix, AZ where the race is held. Outside of running, he’s a father to a 13-year-old daughter named Ellie, who he ran her first race with when she was 6.5 because she wanted to be like her daddy. Hal also runs for the SFRC race team and we’re so glad to have him in this community. Thank you for all you do, Hal! We can’t wait to see you continue this journey of 100-milers. Today’s Friday feature for the 100 Buckle Project is Char Kuperstein (@snakebirdcrab) of San Francisco, CA! Char’s single 100-mile experience was at the Rio Del Lago 100, a popular race that takes place in the Sierra Foothills of California. Although she imagined her first 100-miler would be a point-to-point adventure race, she signed up for RDL as a @wser qualifier and was surprised by how much fun she had at the race. She attributes this largely to the organizers and... volunteers, as well as having good friends and her boyfriend pace her for over half the race. Aside from all the hours taping up blisters and running 70 miles on a mildly sprained ankle, we’d say that Char's race went as smoothly as anyone could hope for in their first 100-miler! Here are some of her running stats: # of 100-mile races completed: 1 First 100-Miler: Rio Del Lago 100 Bucket List race: Western States 100 Favorite trail: Matt Davis Trail (Stinson Beach) Shoe of choice:@hokaoneone Challenger Aside from running, Char is a software engineer with a wide array of hobbies, including birding, nature photography, and exploring the outdoors. Also, she would like to know if wine is a hobby...we’d say it most definitely is! During pre-pandemic times, she used to travel quite a bit with unforgettable adventures in New Zealand, Norway, and Italy. Thank you for sharing your 100-mile story with us, Char! We hope when things get back to normal, your 100-mile journey will continue. Photography by @mrlphotobako #100BuckleProject #100miles #sfrunco #ultrarunning See more

We can’t thank everybody enough for the positive response we’ve received for the 100 Buckle Project! It’s been a real pleasure getting to learn about each runner’s story and sharing it with the SFRC community. We still have runners to highlight but are excited to announce that we are continuing the project with a second round for runners to show off their 100-mile finisher buckles. Spots are limited so use the links below to sign up for your time slot at either our Mill Vall...ey (Oct. 13th) or San Anselmo (Oct. 15th) shops. https://bit.ly/36LFayn Mill Valley: https://bit.ly/34Dk9TO San Anselmo: https://bit.ly/3dbKRae #100BuckleProject #100miles #sfrunco #ultrarunning
