Stories from San Francisco Achievers Class of 2020 Sharing courtesy of: BAYCAT (Bayview Hunters Point Center for Arts & Technology) We’re so proud to share that several BAYCAT youths’ films have been recognized by international and local film festivals in 2020! Although we’re unable to attend in-person screenings, BAYCAT is excited to share a curated film festival playlist to celebrate these talented young artists and their accomplishments.... Please join the San Francisco Achievers in congratulating James Parker Pennington. James directed CREAM’S CUTS and EVEN THE PLAYING FIELD and was part of the Miami 4 Social Change Youth Film Festival 2020 Official Selection. CREAM'S CUTS centers on Chris Cream, barber and shop owner of Dogpatch Barber + Shave in San Francisco, at the intersection of barbering and community service. The short doc EVEN THE PLAYING FIELD highlights Lull Mengesha and how Ethiopian culture has shaped him and helped him obtain success with his company, Datable Services. We are so happy to be part of James' village as he prepares to begins his journey as a freshman at Emerson College. Links to James' films are in the comments below!

We are grateful for the love from Lob! When Lob’s Diversity and Inclusion Working Group (DIWG) met in late May to discuss how we would celebrate Pride this year despite the cancellation, we knew we were asking the wrong question. The first Pride was not a parade it was a riot against police who had systematically intimidated, abused, and arrested queer individuals. It was impossible not to see the parallels between that history and the Black community today. This was not ...a year to celebrate, but to protest. In total, $7000 was raised for the following organizations: San Francisco Achievers The Transgender District TGI Justice Project https://lob.com/blog/pride-marches-on

We are so excited to share the video from one of our strategic partners, Calvary Presbyterian Church. Enjoy this panel discussion that includes Calvary, our Executive Director, and some of the amazing young men that have participated in Achievers. We are grateful to Calvary for their continued support and for having a much needed discussion around Black Lives Matter. This highlights their commitment to doing their part to make this world a better place for all.

In this time of immense tragedy, San Francisco Achievers has long been a place for empowering African American young men in San Francisco and for supporting them through a wide variety of challenges including racism. This is ingrained in our very DNA as part of our mission to inspire and assist African American young men in San Francisco to lead and thrive in higher education and beyond. We accomplish this through mentoring, leadership training and college scholarships. As in...dividuals, as a team and as an organization, we will not stand for bullying, bigotry, or hate of any kind. In this time of extreme sadness, anger and grief we stand with and support the young men we champion not just for a brighter future, but one that truly lives up to the ideals of unity expressed throughout the country today. We are grateful to our vast community of partners and friends who are standing with our students of color with compassion and empathy. We hold one another up and celebrate the differences that make us the rich tapestry that is America. We watch out for one another and stand up against the injustices that threaten not just dreams, but also lives. We all listen to really understand the struggles and deep hurt that some of us may never face. We all stand and rise together. Black Lives Matter!

Last week we were so excited to see our Class of 2020 scholars, while physically distancing, to give them their brand new laptops. Thank you for our amazing Technology Partners for making this possible! The digital divide is real for too many students in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. Each one of the 25 Class of 2020 scholarship recipients has or will receive a brand new Dell laptop, noise cancelling earphones from Plantronics (comes in handy during distance lear...ning) and other tools to properly equip them for their summer and college freshman year. Congrats Class of 2020! Thank you Calvary Presbyterian Church , Stupski Foundation, All Stars Helping Kids , and Plantronics for making this happen so quickly for these amazing young men during this global crisis. #BlackLivesMatter #SanFranciscoAchievers
