Bay Area Cyclists, come on out this Thursday to BIKETOPIA to mix and mingle with fellow cyclists and bid on some awesome silent auction items.

On 10/20/18 at approximately 1:40 p.m., Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety responded to the report of an auto versus bicycle collision in the area of Central... Expressway and Pajaro Avenue. Emergency personnel arrived on scene to discover an adult male injured on the roadway. The bicyclist was transported to Stanford Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the bicyclist will be released by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner Office once his identity has been verified. The vehicle that struck the bicyclist fled the scene. It was described as a 2004-06 Toyota Sienna, minivan maroon or red, in color with front windshield and front fender damage. A vehicle of interest was captured on surveillance footage in the area. This collision is being investigated jointly by the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) and Sunnyvale DPS Investigations Unit. Anyone who has information or witnessed the collision can call the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety at (408) 730-7128. MEDIA CONTACT: Captain Jim Choi (408)401-9471.

Voters and Bicyclists, Proposition 6 threatens much needed progress made by the Road Repair and Accountability act, passed just last year with 2/3 vote in both House and Senate of California. The act benefits the roads and infrastructure of EVERY COUNTY in California by taxing gas and diesel, and increasing car registration fees. Its repeal would cost lives, especially hose of bicyclists and pedestrians, yet some polls indicate it is on the path to passing. Remember: If you ride a bicycle often AND have auto insurance, it's a good idea to check in with your insurance agent to find out how much UIM (underinsured motorist) coverage you have. There is so many uninsured and/or underinsured drivers on the roads, not to mention the fact that California law only requires drivers to have $15,000 of insurance anyway to cover people they hit! If you are a commuting, frequent, or serious cyclist, we recommend you have as much UIM coverage ...as you reasonably can, just in case! And remember, UIM coverage will typically cover you (as well as some of your family members) if the driver commits a hit-and-run and is never found, but often there are strict time limits involved, and it is usually imperative that a police report be filed immediately (otherwise the insurance company may have legal/contractual grounds to deny your claim). Please be safe out there and hopefully there won't be any reason to call us. But if you do find yourself injured in a crash, feel free to call/email us anytime. PLEASE NOTE: We do NOT endorse or recommend any particular insurance company, but most if not all will offer some amount of UIM coverage.
