Happy Juneteenth! It is a momentous day in the history of our country. Please see below a message from the School about this new national holiday, and an important decision from the U.S. Board of Education: This year, we have witnessed an awakening in social justice movements amidst a global pandemic. From Black Lives Matter marches, to supporting civil rights for our LGBTQ+ communities, to the rising awareness of Asian American Pacific Islander Anti-Hate campaigns, people wo...rldwide have been standing up together against social injustices. It is important for our students to see that their voices matter, and that change is possible. Yesterday, President Biden signed into law a bill creating a federal holiday to commemorate June 19, or Juneteenth, the day marking the end of slavery in the United States. This will be the first new federal holiday created by Congress since the designation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983, in honor of the civil-rights leader. According to The Wall Street Journal, Congressional leaders from both parties said that establishing the holiday was an important gesture in recognizing those who suffered under American slavery and as an act of racial reconciliation. And, on this same day, the U.S. Department of Education issued a Notice of Interpretation, explaining that it will enforce Title IX's prohibition on discrimination on the basis of sex to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the nation's schools. U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said, "The Department makes clear that all students including LGBTQ+ students deserve the opportunity to learn and thrive in schools that are free from discrimination." After a year of increased isolation from the pandemic, and with many LGBTQ+ students facing additional challenges in schools, this is a welcome and necessary change. It is such an important day for our students to see that positive change can occur. One of the main tenets of our San Domenico core values is reflection, and we wanted to share this news and ask each of us to reflect upon the positive changes that can happen when we bond together as a community and fight for social justice. Just as hope is growing with the introduction of an effective vaccine against a deadly disease, so hope is growing anew as we, as a country, take important steps in the march towards social equity. There is much work to be done as a community and as a country. San Domenico will continue to teach and learn as one community, and to grow future leaders who advocate for social justice. And now, we pause in gratitude for the positive changes resulting from our collective societal efforts.
Congratulations to Julia Reinhard '18!!

Biology students use chalk art to illustrate how vaccinations work. Knowledge is power.
The end of the year is coming up but the action on campus has not slowed down one bit. Among all sorts of other compelling teaching and learning, the firefighting goats are back, AP Economics students just won Third Place in the CA State Championships, Film Three students are wrapping up their final project, Biology students are illustrating how vaccines work (with chalk art), and our seniors are getting ready to graduate!!! --
Congratulations to Brett Simpson ‘12 on her 2021 Outstanding Young Alumni Award. This newly created award acknowledges and highlights an alum that has graduated within the last ten years. We are delighted to present this honor to Brett as her work continues to embody the San Domenico values of Study, Reflection, Service and Community in her professional life and her service to the community. Brett Simpson is a print and audio journalist who focuses on the intersections of he...alth, the environment, and human rights. She is currently completing her Master’s degree at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, where she leads an investigative team digging into injustices in the elder care industry. This summer, she will travel to the Norwegian Arctic to pursue a fellowship with support from the Human Rights Center and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. There, she will document the systemic fragmentation of Saami indigenous lands for planned resource extraction and renewable energy projects, threatening the livelihoods and cultural continuity of marginalized communities in the fastest-changing region of the world.
Congratulations to Sarah Lee ’07, Ph.D., on her 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award. We are delighted to present this honor to Sarah as her work continues to embody the San Domenico values of Study, Reflection, Service and Community in her professional life and her service to the community. Sarah is an assistant professor at Dominican University of California, where she teaches Organizational Behavior, Leadership, Change Management, Strategic Management, and Innovative Organizati...onal Interventions. Her research primarily studies how social psychological processes affect our attitudes and behaviors in organizations. Specifically, she is interested in unpacking barriers to upward mobility for marginalized groups, why external threats cause shifts in our perceptions, and why some people are perceived more leader-like than others. She has work published in Psychological Science and the Academy of Management Proceeding. Congratulations, Sarah! See more
